Chapter 34
"What do you think of this one?" Liz asked, holding out the catalog so Lucky could see the picture. They were sitting in her living room trying to pick out baby furniture, which was proving to be very frustrating, since Lucky didn't seem to care.
"Fine, I guess. They all look the same to me," he muttered, looking back at the magazine in front of him.
"Look, I know you don't care, but we need to agree on this anyway. Since we aren't allowed to know ahead of time if it's a boy or girl, we need to find neutral stuff. I figure we could paint the room lemon-yellow, and have clowns or teddy bears or something as decoration."
He shrugged, still looking at the magazine. "I guess, but some kids think clowns are scary.'
She sighed. Getting his input on this part of the project was like pulling teeth. "Fine, then what do you suggest we use? A baby's room has to have lots of color and things to look at."
"As long as it's not Barney, it's fine with me," he muttered.
"Lucky! Am I going to have to do this whole assignment by myself, or are you going to snap out of it and help me?" she shouted, growing increasingly frustrated with his attitude.
He looked at her in surprise. "Sorry, Elizabeth. I just don't really care about baby furniture."
"Well, if your going to be this kid's father, you better start caring!" she yelled.
He stared at her for a moment, then burst out laughing.
"What? Why are you laughing at me?" she asked defensively.
"Because you just sounded like my mom! I think you're starting to take this thing too seriously, Elizabeth. It's just make-believe, remember?" he said in between chuckles.
Blushing, she looked down at the table. "I was just trying to make this realistic, that's all," she mumbled.
"Hey, I'm sorry I laughed like that. You have to admit, though, it was kind of funny," he said, still snickering.
"Whatever. Look, we need to decide on something here so we can move on to the next part. There's only a couple of weeks left, and we still have to research doctors."
Trying to be serious again, he looked at the catalog in front of her. "Okay, okay. How about that one?" he asked, pointing to one of the cribs.
She smiled. "That one's perfect. Now, was that so hard?"
He shrugged. "What else do we need?"
"Um..smaller stuff, I guess. High chair, changing table, stroller....isn't that the kind of stuff people get at baby showers?"
"How am I supposed to know that?
"I don't know. Maybe you remember if your mom had one before Lulu was born. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's the kind of gifts people give, so we could just say that's where we're getting it!"
"We should probably still pick stuff out, though. The prices won't matter since they would be gifts, but we should still show that we thought about it," he explained, flipping throught the catalog. "Why don't we just pick some things quckly? If they suck, they were gifts, so we couldn't help it, right?"
She laughed, shaking her head. "You'll do anything to get this part over with, won't you?"
"I'm a guy. This isn't exactly my idea of fun, you know! Here, strollers, high chairs and changing tables. Pick one of each and we can move on." He shoved the catalog at her, pointing out the sections.
Liz rolled her eyes and took the book from him. "Fine." She cut out some pictures to add to the rest and closed the book. "I guess that's enough for today."
"Sounds good to me. I'm starved. Why don't we get something to eat?" Lucky asked, standing up and stretching.
"Sure, but there's nothing here. Not even brownies this time," Liz said with a small smile, remembering the night they spent after the horror movie-fest. It was one of the few times they were together for an extended period of time without really fighting.
"How about Kelly's then? Or do you not like to go there on your days off?"
She shook her head. "No, Kelly's is fine. I need to find out my schedule for next week anyway. There's no chance your dad will be there, is there?"
He laughed and led the way to the front door. "I doubt it. If he is, we'll just ignore him!"

"Hey you two," Bobbie greeted, seeing Lucky and Liz sitting outside Kelly's. "Taking a break from your project?"
"Hi Aunt Bobbie. Yeah, we're done for the day. What brings you here?" Lucky asked, taking a bite out of his sandwich.
"Just saying hi to Tammy. Well, I'll leave you two alone. Bye!" She quickly opened the door and went inside.
Lucky rolled his eyes. "Why does my family always have to do that?"
Liz giggled. "I don't think she meant anything by it. Stop being so paranoid. Not everyone is out to set us up, you know!"
After a few minutes of silence, Liz cleared her throat. "So, what are you doing for Halloween?"
Lucky shrugged. "Probably taking Lulu out trick-or-treating. Wanna come along? I could use some company my own age!"
"Sure, it sounds like fun. I've always loved Halloween. At least this way, I can still trick-or-treat and won't look silly!" she answered, grinning.
"Cool. I'll warn you though. There's a chance Nikolas and Emily might join us. Be prepared for a night of teasing from them."
"I think I'll be okay. As long as we don't dress alike, I think we'll be fine."
"Oh, don't worry. There's no chance your costume will be anything like mine!" he said with a sly grin.
Curious, she looked up at him. "Why? What are you going as?" She pordded him for a few more minutes before giving up. He refused to ruin the surprise. She sighed and shrugged her shoulders. "Fine, don't tell me. It'll probably suck anyway."
"Excuse me? I don't think so. My costume rocks!" he defended.
"If you say so. I think I'll be the judge of that when Halloween comes around," Elizabeth said smugly, taking another bite of her sandwich.
