Chapter 16

Suddenly feeling nervous, Lucien looked at Nikolas to let him know that he wanted to leave. Nikolas took this as his cue and cleared his throat.

"We need to get going. I'm sorry if this was hard on you Laura, but he really is my cousin, not my brother." He hoped that he was able to sound convincing, especially since he wasn't so sure if he was convinced himself anymore. The look in her eyes had been so certain.

She shook her head. "I know you all think I'm losing it again, but I'm not. Luke, you know that I've always been able to sense things about Lucky, remember?"

He nodded slowly, not liking where this was leading, as Nikolas took the opportunity to escape with Lucien.

"Well, I'm sensing something right now, and that man," she said, pointing after Lucien, who was getting on the elevator with Nikolas, "is Lucky. He may not know it, and you guys might not want to accept it, but I can't deny my instincts. Helena must have done something horrible to him to make him forget who he is, but I swear to you, Luke, that was Lucky." She looked up at him with tears in her eyes, praying that he would believe her.

He sighed and took her in his arms. "Okay, baby, I'll see what I can find out. Your instincts have never been wrong before. Now, let's go see how Elizabeth is doing."

Laura nodded and they made their way into her room.

Nikolas turned to Lucien as they left the hospital. "Hey, do you think it could be possible that Laura's right? I mean, you said before that you don't remember a lot about your childhood. Maybe you have amnesia or something."

Lucien looked at him in surprise, then anger. "No, I don't. Look, just because my childhood was uneventful doesn't mean it didn't happen. I remember growing up in Greece with my grandmother and my uncle. How could I be this Lucky person if I was in Greece all that time? I'm a Cassidine, not a Spencer!"

Nikolas could tell he wasn't going to get anywhere this way, so he dropped the subject.

When Nikolas left to meet Emily for dinner, Lucien went back to the hospital. He knew that he wasn't helping anyone by being there, especially if Laura was around, but he couldn't stay away. He had to make sure Elizabeth was okay.

He stuck his head in her room and was pleased to find her alone. He settled down in the chair next to her bed and watched her sleep. He had a strange feeling of deja vu, like he had done this before, but couldn't quite place when. Ignoring it, as he did to all the other strange feelings he had since arriving in Port Charles, he continued to watch her, humming quietly to himself.

"Which room is Elizabeth Webber in?" Carly asked the nurse on duty.

The nurse checked her list. "Room....651"

"Thanks!" Carly said and hurried off to the room. She had become friends with Liz after Lucky died, and Liz had been kind enough to tell her about her cousin. They helped each other deal with his loss, and gained a mutual respect for one another. She had missed Liz while she was in New York, and was surprised to hear she had come back early. She didn't know the details of what happened, just that she fainted in the PC Grille.

As she approached Liz's room, she could hear someone humming. She stopped to listen, not wanting to disturb them, and also just being her usual nosy self. She was surprised when she recognized the tune. It was the song Lucky had written for Elizabeth years ago. Liz played it for her a couple of times, and she had always thought it was very pretty. Her curiosity peaked, she walked around and looked in the window, and was shocked to see that Lucien was sitting by her bed. How did he know that song?

Carly crept into the room and cleared her throat, hoping she wouldn't startle him. He seemed to be in another world, and was looking down at Liz with such tenderness that she couldn't help wondering if he knew her from somewhere.

Lucien looked up when he heard her enter and smiled. "Hello, Carly. Fancy meeting you here."

She chuckled and walked around to the other side of Liz's bed. "She's a good friend of mine. Do you know her?"

He shook his head. "Not really. I'm the reason she's in here, so I felt like I should keep an eye on her when no one else is here, make sure she's okay."

Carly was confused. "What do you mean, you're the reason she's here? I thought she fainted."

"She did, but it was because of me. See, it turns out that I look very much like her boyfriend, who died years ago. You're actually one of the few people here who hasn't noticed. Anyway, she saw me in the restaurant today and passed out. Nikolas said that she woke up and was acting delusional, so they had to sedate her." He sighed and looked down at her again, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. "They're afraid she had a breakdown. I feel terrible about it, and I just wish I could help her."

Carly stared at him in shock, finally seeing the resemblance that she had missed before. "My God, you're right! How did I not see it before? No wonder she fainted. Wait a minute..." she remembered that he was humming when she first showed up. "...what were you singing before? When I first got here, I could hear you humming something."

He shrugged. "I don't know. It's just something that popped into my head. I thought it would be better than just sitting in silence or babbling to her about nothing. Why?"

"Oh, no reason." she mumbled, not sure what to think anymore. "I guess I'll go and let you be alone again," she said, backing towards the door.

"No, please stay. I could use someone to talk to, and hearing your voice might help her. I mean, she doesn't know mine, so I don't think I'm doing her any good by talking to her, but you might."

She nodded and walked back to the bed. She hadn't really wanted to leave, but she thought it was what he wanted. Now she had a chance to talk to him some more. Maybe she could figure out what was going on. She had a strange feeling about him, that he wasn't at all who he said he was. There were too many coincidences adding up: he looked just like Lucky, he was the right age, he knew Elizabeth's song - which she rarely played for anyone else, and he had been looking at her with such love in his eyes when she had first walked into the room. Top that off with Liz's reaction to him, and Carly had a feeling that somehow, Lucien Cassidine was really her "dead" cousin.
