What Happened to Forever?

Chapters 71-72

~*~Chapter 71~*~

"So, what do you think they're going to do?" Luke asks Nikolas, thinking that maybe Lucky leaked a hint to him.

Nikolas shakes his head. "He wouldn't say."

Emily comes rushing back to the table, very excited. "Omigosh, you guys! I just got to meet Miguel Morez! I don't believe it!"

Nikolas smiles at how happy she is. "What happened?"

"Well, I was backstage changing back into my dress during his number. Anyway, when he finished, I was still back there trying to find my earring, and he bumped right into me! He's so nice, I can't believe he used to live here!"

Luke and Laura chuckle, amazed at how energetic she is. "Were we ever that young?" Luke asks his wife.

She smiles. "I was, but I don't know about you..."

"Oh, so now you're a comedian, huh?" he teases, while Emily continues to gush about her encounter with Miguel.

"Should I be jealous?" Nikolas asks, half-joking.

"Nikolas! He's, like, twice my age! Of course you don't need to be jealous Oh, I wish Liz was here so I could tell her. Is her number with Lucky next?"

They all nod, waiting anxiously for Lucy to come back on stage and announce them. They can't wait to see what the two have planned.

"Nervous?" Lucky asks Elizabeth as they stand behind the curtain, waiting for the intermission to be over.

"A little. I've never done this in front of so many people before. What if I screw up? What if I just completely forget the words? Oh, I don't know if I can do this..." she starts pacing, becoming more and more worried.

Lucky laughs. "You'll be fine. We've rehearsed this thing so many times, you're probably singing it in your sleep. Don't worry, okay? I'll be right there with you. Come on, they're going to love you. I still can't believe you've never told anyone that you could sing!"

She rolls her eyes. "That's because I can't! At least not like you can. I can carry a tune, but that's about it. I just hope I don't completely embarrass myself out there! Does this dress look okay?"

He chuckles at how she keeps jumping from subject to subject. "You look beautiful, Elizabeth, now calm down. Come here."

She moves closer to him and he hugs her, hoping it will ease her nerves. She relaxes slightly in his arms. "Thank you. You always know just what I need."

He looks down at her and smiles.

Lucy runs up to them. "Okay, guys, showtime! I'm going to introduce you first, so wait until you hear me announce you." She runs to the curtain, pauses to fix her hair, then waltzes onto the stage to another smattering of applause.

Lucky leans down and kisses Elizabeth lightly. "For good luck." She smiles back at him, feeling calm again.

"Welcome back. This next number is very special to me, because one of the participants is the son of my very good friend. This time last year, we were all mourning his death, but I am happy to say that he is very much alive, and with us here tonight to sing with his beautiful girlfriend." She pauses for a minute, thinking. "You know, it's strange. Last year, we thought he was dead, but it turned out he wasn't. The year before that, we all thought Kathy was dead, but unfortunately, she wasn't either. I hope this doesn't become a tradition here. It's kind of creepy, don't you think? No one's died recently, have they?" she asks jokingly.

"Helena!" Luke yells, causing Alexis to cheer over at the Jacks table, where she and Ned were sitting. Everyone chuckles.

"Well, let's hope the tradition doesn't continue with her...Anyway, enough of that, I'm so happy to introduce Lucky Spencer and Elizabeth Webber!"

Everyone applauds as the couple takes the stage. They're dressed in 40's style clothing, each holding a microphone. They stand at the front of the stage and face each other as the light swing music begins.

(I couldn't think of any choreography for this, so just imagine what you will. Lines beginning with L are sung by Lucky, E means Elizabeth, and B is both together)

(spoken)
L: Oh baby, you're the boss
E: Oh baby you know I love it when you're the boss
L: You know I like it when you say I'm the boss

E: Well, then maybe tonight I'll be the boss, and then tomorrow night....I'll be the boss
Lucky growls teasingly, causing her to giggle.

(singing again)

B: You're the boss

They finish and look out at the audience, who is applauding and laughing. Luke is practically on the floor, he's laughing so hard, and Nikolas is just shaking his head, unable to believe that they just did that.

Elizabeth turns to Lucky and grins. She had never expected such a wonderful reaction. He gently takes her microphone and lays it on the ground. She looks at him strangely, wondering what he's doing.

"Why aren't they getting off the stage?" Lucy whispers to Amy. "The next number is ready. They're supposed to leave now!"

Lucky looks down at Elizabeth and smiles. He raises his microphone and begins to speak. "Elizabeth, being away from you for that year was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I vowed to myself every day that if I was ever able to come back to you, that I'd never let you go. I love you more than life itself, and I can't bear the thought of being without you ever again. If I learned anything from my ordeal, it's that life is unpredictable. We were so confident that we would be together forever, that we had our whole lives ahead of us, but that was almost taken away. I've learned to never take anyone for granted anymore, especially those that I love."

He looks out to the audience for a moment and smiles at his family before turning back to Elizabeth. He smiles warmly at her and slowly gets down on his knee. She gasps and her hand flies to her mouth, suddenly realizing what he's about to do.

He speaks again, his voice wavering with emotion. "Elizabeth, we vowed to love each other forever a year ago, and in my heart that's as good as any wedding, but you deserve so much more. I would be honored if you would agree to marry me, and become my wife officially, not only in front of God, but in front of all of our family and friends. You've always had my heart, and now I would like you to have my name as well. I love you." He pulls out a ring from his jacket pocket and takes her hand.

She's trembling, tears streaming down her face. She wants to be able to say something as moving and emotional as he just did, but she's too choked up to make a big speech. She takes a deep shaky breath and smiles. "Oh, Lucky, yes. Of course I'll marry you!"

He beams and removes her old ring, putting the new one in its place. He then puts the old one on her other hand and stands up to embrace her. They're both crying, and the audience bursts into applause. Lucky pulls away and gazes into her eyes before giving her a tender kiss. Suddenly he remembers where they are.

"Oh, Lucy's going to kill me!" he says, forgetting that he's still holding the microphone. Everyone laughs and Lucy walks out on stage, her eyes wet with tears.

"Lucky Spencer, how could you say such a thing! Now get over here and give me hug, both of you!" They both laugh and hug Lucy as she whispers congratulations to them. Once they're off the stage she turns back to the audience and sighs. "Well, that was definitely unexpected! Why don't we take a quick break so we can all collect ourselves?" She quickly leaves the stage to go fix her makeup.

~*~Chapter 72~*~

Lucky and Elizabeth walk back to their table, hand in hand. Luke and Laura watch them approach, still trying to grasp what had just happened.

"Hey, guys, what'd you think of our song?" Lucky asks casually.

Laura quickly wipes her face and stands up. "Oh, don't pull that innocent act on us! You get over here right now, young man, and give your mother a hug!" she orders, laughing.

Lucky goes to hug her as Luke stands up and hugs Elizabeth. After everyone has hugged each other, they sit down.

Luke looks at his son. "Cowboy, do you realize that you just did that in front of the entire town?"

Lucky blushes slightly. "Yeah, now that I think about it I can't believe I had the guts to do that either!" He turns to smile at Elizabeth. "I don't regret a word I said, though."

They both smile at each other as Laura sniffs. "Oh, honey, what you did up there was the most romantic thing I've ever seen."

Luke chuckles. "I guess he takes after his old man after all, right babe?"

Laura looks at him and smirks. "I don't recall you ever doing anything like that." Seeing the hurt look on his face she smiles. "Oh, you're still the most romantic man I know, Luke." She squeezes his hand as he smiles back at her.

Tearing himself away from Elizabeth for a moment, Lucky turns to his brother. "Nikolas, would you be my best man?"

"Yeah, and Emily, you have to be my maid of honor!" Elizabeth adds.

"Of course!" Emily says.

Nikolas looks at his brother and smiles proudly. "I'd be honored."

Elizabeth leans in to Lucky and whispers, "All right, how long were you planning that?"

He smiles. "Actually, I just got the idea a couple of days ago. I mean, I've been wanting to ask you ever since I got back, but with everything that's happened, I haven't had a chance."

"Well, I'm glad you waited. I can't think of a more perfect way to get engaged. I love you so much." She leans in to kiss him.

"Oh, man, we thought they were mushy before. Now they're going to be downright disgusting!" Luke teases, grinning at them.

Lucky rolls his eyes. "Like you're one to talk. You and Mom are pretty disgusting yourselves sometimes!"

Luke wiggles his eyebrows at Laura. "Yeah, we are, aren't we?" She hits him playfully, trying not to laugh.

Lucy comes back on stage in yet another dress. Once the applause dies down she sighs. "Well, this has certainly been a night full of surprises, hasn't it? First, Miguel Morez performs, then that beautiful proposal..." she trails off, smiling at the Spencer table. "And the evening isn't over yet! I want to take a moment to thank our sponsors. For the second year in a row, Jasper and Jerry Jacks have been generous enough to underwrite the ball, so please everyone give them a round of applause. Thank you so much!"

When the audience is silent again, Lucy introduces the next act. "Now, please welcome the doctors of General Hospital!"

Tony, Alan, Monica, Chris, Eve, Karen, Joe, Ellen and Matt all take the stage as Tony begins to sing, "Bad Medicine." The rest of the doctors are dancing around and singing along to the chorus.

I ain't got a fever got a permanent disease
It'll take more than a doctor to prescribe a remedy
I got lots of money but it isn't what I need
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me
I got all the symptoms count 'em 1,2,3

First I need
That's what you get for falling in love
Then you bleed
You get a little but it's never enough
On your knees
That's what you get for falling in love
And now this boy's addicted cause your kiss is the drug

Your love is like bad madicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
There ain't no doctor that can
Cure my disease

Bad, bad medicine
Bad, bad medicine

I don't need no needle
To be giving me a thrill
And I don't need no anesthesia
Or a nurse to bring a pill
I got a dirty down addition
It doesn't leave a track
I got a jones for your affection
Like a monkey on my back

There ain't no paramedic
Gonna save this heart attack

When you need
That's what you get for falling in love
Then you bleed
You get a little but it's never enough
On your knees
That's what you get for falling in love
Now I'm addicted and your kiss is the drug

Your love is like bad madicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
So let's play doctor, baby
Cure my disease

Bad, bad medicine
Bad, bad medicine

I need a respirator cause I'm running out of breath
You're an all night generator wrapped is stockings and a dress
When you find your medicine you take what you can get
Cause if there's something better baby well thay haven't found it yet

Your love is like bad madicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
There ain't no doctor that can
Cure my disease

Your love is like bad madicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
Your love's the potion that
Can cure my disease

Bad, bad medicine
Bad, bad medicine

They leave the stage to more applause. Lucky leans over to Elizabeth and whispers. "I'm going to run to the bathroom. I'll be right back." He kisses her quickly and gets up, quietly making his way out of the room.

He goes out into the lobby and shuts the door behind him, taking a deep breath. He was still floating from Elizabeth's acceptance of his proposal. She was really going to be his wife! Smiling, he starts off towards the bathroom.

Halfway there, he feels a strange sensation in his arm. He whirls around as a man flies out of the shadows and attacks another man who had been standing behind him. It takes him a moment to realize what's going on. The bodyguard that Sonny had on him had just jumped another man. Lucky looks down at his arm in shock, and sees a syringe sticking out of it. He passes out just as someone opens the doors to see what all the commotion is about. The last thing he hears before blacking out is Elizabeth screaming his name.
