Chapter 61
Lucky pulled into a parking space an turned off the car. Liz started to open the door.
“Wait. Stay right there,” he said, getting out and hurrying around to her side. He opened the door and took her hand, helping her out of the car. She giggled at his attempt at chivalry.
“Why thank you, sir,” she said formally, trying to keep a straight face as he held out his arm for her to take. She looped her arm through his and they walked across the crowded parking lot to the school.
“Wow,” Liz breathed as the entered the gymnasium. “Are you sure this is the same school we’ve been going to for the past few months?”
Lucky laughed as they made their way to the refreshments. “Yeah, the decorating committee always goes a bit overboard for these things.”
“Oh, so you’ve been to other dances before?” she teased.
“Some, but never with a date as beautiful as you,” he answered with a grin, handing her a cup of punch.
She took the cup from him and smiled. “Thanks.”
“So what about you? I’m sure you’ve been to plenty of school dances.”
She shook her head. “Believe it or not, I haven’t. I told you before, I don’t usually like to dance. Plus, our school’s dances were always so dumb. My friends and I would stay home and rent cheesy movies instead.”
“Does this mean I might convince you to dance with me?” he asked flirtatiously.
She finished her punch and tossed the cup in a nearby garbage can. “Only the slow ones. I don’t do fast dances, remember?”
“How could I forget?” He grinned as a slow song began to play, holding out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
She took his hand and followed him out onto the dance floor. “Lucky, the formal stuff has got to go. We’re not in the 1800s anymore.”
Lucky wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close. “I thought I was just being gentlemanly.”
She shook her head and threw her arms around his neck. “It was very sweet, but I don’t think I could handle a whole evening of it. You can go back to being your usual self now.”
“Good, because I don’t know if I could have kept that up all night!”
As one slow song led into another, they danced closer and closer to one another, until their bodies seemed almost fused together. Elizabeth laid her head on his shoulder and sighed, feeling completely content in his arms. He smiled as a stray strand of her hair tickled his chin, thinking that he never wanted to move from that spot. Her body fit so perfectly against his, he silently prayed the night would never end, because then he would have to let go of her.
A fast song began to play, and Liz sighed, reluctantly lifting her head off of Lucky’s shoulder. “I guess they had to play one sooner or later.”
He smiled and leaned down to kiss her. “I guess we might as well find a seat somewhere. They could keep this up for a while.” She nodded and followed him over to the bleachers. They sat down and he put his arm across her shoulders, leaning her head against him. They sat that way for a while, silent, watching the other students dance.
Lucky looked down and saw her idly playing with her ring and smiled. “You’re still wearing it.”
“Hm?” she asked, looking up at him. She had been off in a daydream and hadn’t heard his question.
“I said you’re still wearing your ring.”
She looked at her hand and smiled. “Yeah, I can’t seem to take it off. I’ve tried, trust me, but I’ll get it about halfway off my finger, and I just can’t go any further. I guess I just got too used to it, and without it my hand seems almost naked.”
Lucky smiled and held up his hand. “Me too.” They both laughed. “Man, I remember the day she gave us these ugly things, I couldn’t wait to be able to take it off, but even later that day, I couldn’t do it. Maybe even back then I knew that we were meant to be together.”
She smiled and kissed him. “I think I knew too. When you kissed me at that stupid wedding she made us go through, I felt something that I’ve never felt before. It was probably a sign, but it scared me, so I ignored it and fought my feelings even harder than usual.”
He hugged her tightly. “Well, we’re together now, and that’s all that matters. We’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, what’s a few lost months, right?”
Before she could answer, a slow song started to play. “Oooh, I love this song. Let’s go!” She stood up, dragging Lucky behind her. They hurried out to the dance floor and resumed their earlier stance, clinging tightly to each other as they swayed to the music.
And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
'Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
And you bleed just to know you're alive
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
As the song ended, Lucky could hear Liz sniffing. He leaned back to look at her and saw a tear run down her cheek. “Elizabeth, what’s wrong?” he asked, afraid he had done something to upset her.
She laughed and shook her head. “That song always makes me cry. It reminds me of that movie it’s from, you know, ‘City of Angels’? Have you seen it?”
He nodded, relieved that it was nothing serious. “Yeah, my mom made me sit through it one night.”
“It was so beautiful, how he gave everything up just to be with her like that, but it was also so sad....”
“The way it ended?” he asked, wiping a tear off her face.
“Yeah. I can’t imagine what I would do if something like that happened to me. If I had finally found someone, and then lost them.” She looked at him sadly and he shook his head.
“Well, don’t, because I’m not going anywhere. Now that I’ve found you, I’m never letting go. You’re stuck with me.”
She laughed lightly and wiped her face. “Promise?”
“Promise,” he answered, leaning down to kiss her, forgetting that they were in the middle of a crowded room. Nothing else existed, just the two of them, dancing together, the way it was meant to be.
