Chapter 53
Liz climbed into the car and leaned over to kiss Lucky. “Good morning!” she greeted happily.
“You’re in a good mood today,” Lucky said with a smile as he pulled out of her driveway and headed for the school.
“Well, it’s Friday, and you know what that means.” She grinned at him and pulled a folder out of her bag, holding it up proudly.
He glanced over and chuckled. “It means we’re done with the project! You know, it’s funny, but for so long we were dying for this moment so that we could finally get away from each other and now look at us.”
She smiled an nodded. “Yeah, I know. Still, I’m glad it’s over. That project was starting to get on my nerves. I just hope we get a decent grade.”
“Hey, we’ve gotten almost all As on it so far. I don’t think we have anything to worry about. But now that it’s over, you don’t have any reason to be around me anymore, do you?” He turned and grinned at her, waiting for her answer.
She pretended to think for a moment, then shrugged. “You know, you’re right.” Lucky glared at her before she could continue, causing her to laugh. “Oh, I’m just kidding, silly. I don’t need an excuse to be around you, I’m your girlfriend, remember?”
“Right,” he said, pulling into a parking space. He turned off the car and leaned over to kiss her. What began as a simple kiss quickly grew more passionate, until Liz had to pull away to catch her breath.
“Lucky, this isn’t a drive-in!” she said, gasping for air.
He grinned, lightly brushing his lips against hers. “It could be.”
“But it’s not. Now we better get in there before the bell rings.” She backed away and opened the car door, figuring if she left the car he’d have no choice but to do the same.
“Oh, all right,” he grumbled, grabbing his bag and climbing out of the car. “You’re no fun, you know that?”
She joined him as they walked up to the school. “I am too I can be lots of fun,” she said flirtatiously, winking quickly at him, then dashing ahead.
He laughed and chased after her, into the school. They hurried into their classroom and fell into their seats, out of breath.
“Hey, are you doing anything for Thanksgiving?” Lucky asked once he could speak again.
“I don’t think so. Gram usually gets stuck working on holidays.”
“Great, then you can come to my house. My mom even got my dad to agree to invite Nikolas. It should be fun.”
Liz laughed. “Sure, why not? What time should I be there? “
He shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ll come get you.” They smiled at each other as the bell rang. Ms. Kraft immediately began to collect the last portion of the projects.
“I’ll have your final grades on Monday, but that doesn’t mean you can slack off for the rest of the semester. I still have a final exam, which we will spend these last couple of weeks preparing for. It will be based on the concepts you’ve learned while doing these projects, so the better you’ve done, the more likely you’ll do well on the test.” She took the last folder and went back to her desk, then started the day’s lecture. Lucky and Liz spent the rest of the class staring at one another, not listening to anything she was saying.

Lucky opened his front door and hurried inside, pulling Liz in after him. “Mom! Elizabeth’s coming for Thanksgiving!” he shouted as they ran up the stairs to his room.
“Okay, honey!” Laura shouted, coming out of the kitchen in time to hear his bedroom door slam. She chuckled and went back into the kitchen. “Those two have been inseparable since that talent show.”
Luke grinned. “I know. They’re something, aren’t they? I just hope the little lady can handle a Spencer family dinner like that!”
“I’ve seen how well she handles Lucky, trust me, she’ll be fine. I’m more worried about how you’re going to be. Do you really think you can go a whole evening being civil to Nikolas?”
“Of course I can, as long as he doesn’t push me. If he behaves, I’ll behave.” He puffed on his cigar for a moment, then looked back at the kitchen door. “I wonder what they’re doing up there.”
Laura chuckled as she unloaded the dishwasher. “They’re 17 years old, Luke. What do you think they’re doing?”
“You know, I’d rather not think about that. For parents, we’re pretty progressive, don’t you think? I mean, letting our teenage son and his teenage girlfriend lock themselves in his room like that? Most parents would have a heart attack at the mere idea of such a thing!”
She shrugged. “I trust Lucky, don’t you? Anyway, I’m not one to stand in the way of young love.”
Luke grinned at her. “You think they’re in love already?”
“Maybe, or at least close to it. Haven’t you seen the way they look at each other? That’s more than just infatuation.”
“How long do you think before they realize it? Christmas? New Year’s?”
“Luke, don’t start that now!” Laura warned, seeing where his line of questioning was leading.
“Start what?” he asked innocently. “I was just asking a simple question. Me, I think they’ll probably declare their undying love by Christmastime. How about you?”
She shook her head. “Oh no, I’m not playing your games anymore. He’s still mad at us for that last bet. Can’t you just leave them alone now?”
Luke chuckled and extinguished his cigar. “Leave them alone? Why, that’s no fun. Fine, if you won’t play, then I’ll find someone else who will. Maybe Nikolas will want a chance to redeem himself after losing so badly to Emily last time,” he mused.
“Luke, no! No more bets on our son’s love life, you hear me?” She glared at him, hoping to get her point across. Luke laughed and nodded.
“Okay, fine, no bets. But if they’re proclaiming their love by Christmas, I get to say ‘I told you so’, how’s that?”
Laura laughed and shook her head, knowing he wasn’t going to give up without a fight. “Fine, fine. You can say ‘I told you so,’ but that’s it. No money passes hands this time!”
Luke grinned and sat back in silent victory as Laura began to make dinner.
