Chapter 49

“Hey Cowboy, lookin’ good out there!” Luke said cheerfully as Lucky and Elizabeth approached them. He was doing his best to act innocent, knowing that the kids had caught them staring earlier. He grinned when he saw how Lucky was holding Liz’s hand, even if Lucky didn’t even realize it himself. He had done it instinctively to get her to follow him, and just hadn’t let go yet.

Lucky rolled his eyes. “Yeah, whatever. What are all of you up to over here?”

Everyone looked at Luke, waiting to see what his excuse would be. “Why, we’re just congratulating the happy couple, right guys?” He looked at the other guilty adults as they quickly nodded in agreement. “Mind if I kiss the bride?” He grabbed Chloe, bent her back over his arm, and placed a big smooch on her lips, then stood her up again. She was so thrown by it, she just blinked at Jax in confusion. Everyone burst out laughing as Lucky led a giggling Liz away in disgust.

“I swear, he doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘serious’!” Lucky grumbled as they sat down at an empty table.

“Oh, give him a break. He’s just having fun.” She giggled again. “Your dad cracks me up!”

Lucky rolled his eyes. “Well, I’m glad you’re so entertained. As usual, he managed to weasel out of answering my question.”

“I’m sure it was nothing. They were just watching, that’s all.” She looked up and smiled at Nikolas and Emily, who were hovering nearby. They smiled back and quickly retreated to another table. “Is it just me, or have you noticed how Nikolas and Emily seem to always be around lately? Every time I turn around, there they are.”

He shook his head. “My dad probably hired them to spy on us or something. What’s his deal, anyway? Since when does he care so much about my love life?”

“Love life?” Liz asked, trying not to smile.

Lucky looked up in surprise. Had he just said that out loud? “Um, well, in his mind, I mean. You know, that whole ‘fate theory’ of his. I wish he would find another hobby.”

“Sorry, Cowboy, not gonna happen,” Luke said from behind him, causing Lucky to nearly jump out of his seat. Liz covered her mouth to stifle a laugh, causing Lucky to glare at her.

He turned around to look at his father. “Why is it so important to you for us to get together? Can’t you just be happy that we’re friends and let it go?”

Luke grinned and shook his head. “Nope, you’re too stubborn to see it for yourself, so I’ve made it my mission in life to show you. Sooner or later, Cowboy, you’ll come to your senses, and if I can do anything to push it along a little faster, then by golly, I will!”

“Nice speech, Dad, but I don’t need your help. I’m perfectly capable of living my own life. Why don’t you go concentrate on living yours for a while?” He couldn’t help getting irritated, his father just never failed to push his buttons.

“Now why would I want to do that when yours is so much more interesting?” Luke joked as he walked away. Liz giggled again, drawing another glare from Lucky. “What’s so funny?”

“You and your dad. I love how he knows exactly what to say to make you mad. He knows you so well, and you fall for it every time!”

“Yeah, well, the two of you should form a club. Last time I checked, you were pretty good at annoying me on a regular basis as well,” he grumbled, slouching down in his chair. Now that Luke was gone, he wasn’t feeling so angry anymore, and instead felt kind of silly. Liz was right, he did let his dad get to him.

“Hey Chloe, sorry about that back there. I needed to do something to stop him from asking questions,” Luke said, rejoining the group.

Chloe just smiled sheepishly. “Um, it’s okay I guess. You didn’t mind, did you Jax?” She looked at her new husband and grinned, knowing he probably wanted to kill Luke right then.

“Oh, of course not,. Anytime you want to kiss my wife, Luke, just come right over,” he said sarcastically.

Luke laughed and put an arm around Laura protectively. “Don’t mind if I do, but that offer doesn’t go both ways. No one but me kisses my wife.” He smiled at her and wiggled his eyebrows, causing her to laugh.

Jax groaned. “Did it work at least?”

Luke nodded, glancing back at the table where Lucky and Liz were sitting. “Yeah, I got him all riled up, so he’s completely forgotten about all of us watching them. For now.”

“You’re right, though. There’s definitely something going on there. I wonder if he even noticed that he was holding her hand before?” Felicia asked.

Luke shook his head. “Nah, if he did, he would have dropped it like a hot plate. Something tells me it won’t be long now....”

Later that night, Lucky was sitting in his room, trying to figure out what he was going to play at the talent show the following week. He had a bunch of songs that he had already written, but none of them seemed right. To make matters worse, the more he tried to think of a song, the more his mind wandered to Elizabeth.

He thought back to their dance, a smile playing across his lips as he remembered how perfectly she seemed to fit in his arms. He could still remember the way her arms felt around his neck, how good she smelled, how soft her hair looked. He sighed and stood up, then began to pace the small room.

“What’s going on here? Why can’t I get her out of my head? She doesn’t even annoy me anymore, now everything she does just seems cute. Damn it, Spencer, stop thinking about her for once and write a stupid song!” He grabbed his guitar and sat down again, picking out some notes, trying to form a tune in his mind. After a while, he had a basic song down. All he needed now were the lyrics. He grabbed some paper and started sketching out a chorus, jotting things down, letting words and phrases come into his head the way he always did.

After a few hours of writing, he sat back and really looked at the song that had taken form. Whenever he wrote, he tended to detach himself from it, until it was almost like another person had written the song, and this time was no different. He gasped when he read the lyrics in front of him.

“Did I just write that?” he whispered to himself in shock. “Oh, man, Dad was right all along.” He fell back onto his pillow and stared at the ceiling in shock. Now what we he supposed to do?
