Chapter 47

Lucky groaned. “Why can’t they just leave me alone? First the carnival, now this!”

“Whoa, what carnival? I don’t remember anything about a carnival!” Emily said, looking at Nikolas to see if he had heard about it. He shook his head and looked back at his brother, waiting for an explanation.

Lucky just shrugged. “We went to the carnival, they showed up, that’s all.”

“Come on, guys! They’re getting ready to start!” Laura shouted, motioning for them to go into the living room. They walked down the aisle, to the front of the room where Bobbie had saved a row of seats on the groom’s side. Jerry was the best man, so she had made sure to get there early. Lucky stared straight ahead as they passed Liz and Audrey, not wanting to let on that he knew she was there. He was dying to look at her again, but he forced himself not to. He didn’t want to give his parents, who were walking right behind him, the satisfaction.

“You know he wants to look,” Luke whispered to Laura as they passed Liz. “Did you see his jaw drop when she walked in before?”

Laura shushed him as they took their seats. “Be quiet, he’s going to hear you!”

“So what? He’s already figured out that we’re behind this whole thing. We haven’t exactly been keeping our opinions to ourselves on this subject!”

Liz was sitting next to her grandmother, on the bride’s side of the room, patiently waiting for the ceremony to start. She still didn’t want to be there, but at the same time, she found herself getting caught up in the whole thing. The house was decorated so beautifully, and she knew that Chloe’s dress would be magnificent. She couldn’t helping thinking about the wedding she and Lucky had planned so many months ago, Just as she was scolding herself for thinking about him again, she looked up and there he was, walking right past her to the front of the room. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe. He looked gorgeous! She immediately wished that she had taken more time to get ready that day, maybe put her hair up or spent more time on her makeup.

‘What’s wrong with you? It’s Lucky! Why do you care how you look? He doesn’t even realize you’re here, just watch the ceremony and forget about him!’ she thought, staring at the front of the church. Unfortunately, that was easier said than done, and she found herself constantly sneaking small glances at him, even though all she could see was the back of his head.

Lucky sat through the ceremony, not really listening to any of it, thinking about how Elizabeth was only a few rows behind him. He knew all he had to do was turn his head slightly and he’d be able to see her. As much as he wanted to do that, Nikolas was sitting next to him, and he didn’t want him to see him looking at her. He sighed and sank back in his seat, watching Jax say his vows.

At this point, Liz had stopped watching Jax and Chloe altogether. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from Lucky, and found herself hoping that he would turn around, even for a second, and see her there. Even though she had a feeling that it wasn’t a coincidence that he was there, that somehow her grandmother and his parents had arranged it, she wasn’t mad. She had wanted a chance to talk to him, to apologize for stepping out of bounds by signing him up for that contest.

Suddenly, Lucky had an idea. ‘Think of something to say to Nikolas, then, while you’re whispering to him, you can glance back at Elizabeth. That way it won’t look so obvious!’ He chuckled to himself at how ridiculous he sounded, trying to make up ways to see her. What had happened to him? When did she change from the obnoxious brat he had met back in August to the girl that he couldn’t get out of his mind today? Finally, he leaned over to his brother.

“Where’s the reception?” he whispered, looking back at Elizabeth. Their eyes met instantly, and she quickly looked away, embarrassed that he had caught her staring at him. He smiled slightly as Nikolas answered him.

“Port Charles Hotel, I thought you knew that.”

“Hm? Oh, um, no I never asked before. Thanks,” he whispered, facing the front of the room again.

Liz could feel the blood rushing to her face. She had been watching Lucky when all of a sudden he had turned to say something to Nikolas. She didn’t look away, figuring they would whisper for a moment, then turn to the front again. It was the first time she had seen Lucky’s face that day, and she didn’t want to look away. The next thing she knew, she was looking right into his eyes. It startled her, and she quickly looked down at her hands, Obviously, he had known she was there, because he had looked right at her instead of searching around the room. She smiled a little and looked up again. He was facing the front once more, so she forced herself to watch the bride and groom instead.

Lucky could feel his heart pounding. He hadn’t planned on being caught like that! Now she knew that he knew she was there, and that he had turned to look at her. He felt foolish, but at the same time couldn’t help smiling. After all, she had been looking at him first!

He couldn’t believe he was acting so silly. He reminded himself again that they were only friends, that he had decided after the carnival to let her make the first move, or at least wait until he was sure she felt the same way he did. Just because she was looking at him didn’t mean she liked him that way.

After about a minute of watching Jax and Chloe, Liz’s eyes traveled back to Lucky. She didn’t know why, maybe it was because they hadn’t seen much of each other since their fight, maybe she just missed having him around, or maybe it was just that he looked so darn yummy in that suit.... ‘Whoa, where did that come from?’ she thought, trying to suppress a smile. ‘Well, it’s true, isn’t it?’ She shook her head slightly, trying to get rid of such thoughts.

The wedding was nearing the end, and Lucky found himself becoming increasingly nervous. It was almost time for the kiss, and he couldn’t stop thinking back to their own "wedding" in class. He could still remember how soft her lips felt on his. ‘Stop it, man!’ he thought, shaking his head. ‘You’re just friends, remember?’ He sighed as the minister said the final words. “You may kiss the bride.” Jax lifted Chloe’s veil and kissed her softly. As soon as their lips touched, Lucky turned to look behind him. He didn’t mean to, didn’t even know what made him do it, but he turned around anyway.

When Jax and Chloe kissed, Liz instinctively looked at Lucky again, just as he turned to look at her, and their eyes locked. Everyone was applauding the newlyweds, but the room seemed to melt away. They continued to stare at each other as Jax and Chloe started walking down the aisle, unable to break their gaze.

Luke turned to smile at his wife and whispered, “Baby, you’re a genius,” before quickly flashing a thumbs-up at Audrey.
