Chapter 42
“Thank you,” Liz said quietly as they stood in line for the ferris wheel.
“For what?” Lucky asked. They had been standing in silence for so long, her sudden comment seemed to come from out of the blue.
“For this,” she answered, holding up the stuffed cat. “It was sweet of you to win it for me.”
He couldn’t help grinning. “Oh, so I’m sweet now? Does that mean you don’t think I’m obnoxious, chauvantistic or annoying anymore?”
She laughed. “Oh, don’t worry, I’m sure it’s only a temporary lapse in judgment. Give it a few minutes, and I’m sure you’ll do something to restore my earlier assumptions!”
He rolled his eyes. “You can’t just compliment me and leave it at that, can you? You always have to follow it with an insult!”
“Well, I have to do something to knock you back down to earth. Otherwise, your head would just get so inflated, you might float away. Then how am I supposed to finish this project?”
Lucky just shook his head as they neared the front of the line. The couple in front got on, and they moved up again. There was only one couple left in front of them.
“Ooh!” Liz squealed. “We’re getting the blue one!”
“The what?” Lucky asked, wondering what the heck she was talking about.
“Look,” she said, pointing at the ferris wheel as the next couple was getting in. “The next car, or whatever it’s called, is blue!” She grinned, clearly excited about it.
“I didn’t know it mattered,” he said, trying to hide his amusement. For some reason, he found it extremely cute that she was so excited about the color of their car.
She shrugged. “It doesn’t, I guess. It’s just a nice bonus. Honestly, would you rather ride in the blue one or in that puke-yellow thing they’re getting on right now?” she asked, pointing at the one that was being loaded.
Lucky lauhged and shook his head. “It really doesn’t matter to me. It’s not like you can see what color it is when you’re inside, anyway!”
“Oh, shut up!” she pouted, crossing her arms over her chest. “You’re no fun, you know that?”
Before he could answer, the blue car was unloaded and the operator was motioning for them to get in.

“The ferris wheel, now this has possibilities!” Luke said triumphantly as they watched Lucky and Liz board the ride.
Laura just laughed. “Luke, I think you’re enjoying this more than they are!”
“You know, I probably am! Come on, let’s get closer. I wanna watch!”
She laughed again at his exuberance. “Luke, you’re going to get us in trouble. What if they see us?”
“Oh, nonsense! They’ll be too busy gazing into each other’s eyes to see us down here on the ground. Come on, live a little! Don’t tell me you’re afraid of your own son now!”
She shook her head and allowed him to lead her out into the grassy area below the ferris wheel. They watched as it slowly began to turn. “How are you so certain that they’ll even be looking at each other? It looked like they were arguing ealier.”
“Nah, that was just a little lover’s quarrel. They’re probably over it already,” Luke said, grinning.
“Lover’s quarrel? They’re not even dating yet, don’t you think you’re jumping the gun a bit there?”
He laughed and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “Baby, he’s a Spencer. Once we fall, we fall fast!”

“So, what do you think Ms. Kraft is going to torture us with next?” Lucky asked, trying to break the uncomfortable silence that had fallen between them as soon as they had boarded the ride.
Liz sighed, looking over the side of their car at the ground below. “I don’t know, but it better be something happy! I’m ready to give her a piece of my mind about that baby thing she pulled on us.”
He chuckled at the thought of Elizabeth reaming their teacher. “I suggest if you want an A on this, keep your anger to yourself until after the semester is over! I don’t think yelling at the teacher will get us any brownie points.”
“Mmm.. brownies,” she muttered, still looking out at the scenery as they slowly rose in the air.
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, I guess that elephant ear didn’t fill me up very much, cause I’m hungry again.” She smiled sheepishly. “You said soemthing about brownies, and I guess I drifted a bit.”
“Brownies...” he mumbled, his mind floating back to the night he spent at her house. He was lost in his thoughts for a moment until her voice broke in.
“Lucky? Earth to Lucky!” she said, waving her hand in front of his face. She giggled when he looked at her in confusion. “Where were you just now, cause you certainly weren’t here!”
“Oh, um, nowhere. I just spaced out a little, that’s all,” he answered, turning away so she wouldn’t see him blushing.
“Liar!”
He turned back, surprised at her comment. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me. You’re lying. You were just thinking about something, but you’re too embarrassed to tell me. I’m right, aren’t I?” She had seen him blush, and had to know why. Not that she thought it had anything to do with her, but just because she was nosy.
“Um, I was just remembering when we made those brownies, that’s all,” he said quietly. Before she could respond, the ferris wheel stopped to let people off. They were almost at the top, which meant there would be a lot of stopping and starting before it was their turn to get off the ride.
“Really? I didn’t think you thought about stuff like that.” She looked up and met his eyes, startled by how intently he was looking at her. They stared at each other as the wheel jerked into motion again, bringing them to the top.
A breeze came through and blew a strand of hair into Liz’s face. Lucky reached up and moved it out of the way, his fingers lingering on her cheek. A shiver ran through her body from his touch.
“You cold?” he whispered hoarsely, still unable to tear his eyes away from hers. She shook her head slightly, and he slowly brought his face closer to hers. He could feel his pulse racing, and all he could hear anymore was the blood rushing in his ears. Everything around them melted away as he quickly licked his lips and leaned in to kiss her.
Liz felt like her heart was going to stop when she realized what was about to happen, Everything seemed to go into slow-motion as the ferris wheel began its descent. Lucky began to close the gap between them, and she broke his gaze for a moment, letting her eyes drift out to the crowd below. She gasped suddenly, “oh my God!”
Lucky froze, afraid that he had scared her. “What’s wrong?” he whispered, unable to find the strength to speak.
She sighed and pointed behind him. “Look.”
Reluctantly, he turned to see what she was talking about and groaned when his eyes fell on none other than his parents, standing at the base of the ferris wheel, watching them.
