Chapter 4

The rest of the day went by rather uneventfully. They had 3 classes together after lunch, but didn't speak to each other again. Lucky had friends in them, and was always talking to them. Liz tried to get to know some of the girls, but they were too wrapped up in themselves to really notice her.

The final bell rang, and students poured out into the hallways. Elizabeth went to her locker to get the books she would need that night, then headed out for her car. As she walked along the sidewalk, she heard a car horn. She turned around to see if they were honking at her. "God, he's like a parasite!" she muttered, recognizing the pink Cadillac pulling up to the curb beside her. She stopped and looked through the window, waiting for him to say something.

"Do you want a ride to your car?" he asked, still feeling a little guilty about what happened that morning.

"I think I can walk there just fine. I don't need you to remind me that it's so far away!" she snarled.

He raised his hands in surrender. "Hey, I was just trying to be nice. Look, I feel bad that I took that space, okay? The least I can do is drive you to your car!"

She looked at him, her eyes sparkling with victory. "So you admit you took it! I knew it!" She opened the passenger door and climbed in. She may be stubborn, but her feet were killing her, and she never passed up an excuse to be lazy!

He smirked at her as she sat down. "So you don't mind being seen in a pink car?"

She glared at him. "It's only to my parking space. Anyway, it's not like anyone knows me here..." she couldn't believe how hard it was for her to meet people at this school. It was probably because by the time people reach their senior year, they already have their circle of friends, and are reluctant to make any more.

Lucky looked at her. "Didn't you meet anyone today?"

"Not really. Everyone's too wrapped up in their little cliques. It's okay, I wasn't expecting to become Miss Popular overnight. Anyway, I haven't met anyone that I even like yet!" she said, looking at him pointedly.

He chuckled. "Yeah, well, like me or not, I'm all you've got right now." He ignored her snort of disgust as he pulled up to her car and turned to her. "Look, if you have any questions, about the project or just Port Charles in general, give me a call. My dad's in the book."

She thanked him quickly and got out of the car. He drove away as she unlocked her car door. She didn't get him. One minute he's insulting her and the next he's offering her rides and practically giving her his phone number!

She drove home, stopping at the supermarket to pick up some bridal magazines. Audrey was sitting on the couch, reading. She looked up and smiled. "How was your first day?"

Elizabeth threw her books down on the end table and flopped on the couch next to her grandmother. "It was horrible, Gram. I was running late, and this...jerk took my parking space! Then it turned out that he was in my first period, and since we were late, we got stuck being partners on this big, semester-long project that counts as our entire grade! I don't like anyone there yet, either. I wish I was back home!"

Audrey reached over and patted her shoulder. "New schools are always hard to get used to, dear. This is a wonderful town, and I'm sure you'll make a ton of friends. Who knows, maybe this boy will turn out to be one of them."

Liz glared at her. "Lucky Spencer will never be anything more to me than an annoyance! He's arrogant and obnoxious and chauvinistic!"

Audrey looked at her curiously. "Did you say Lucky Spencer?" Liz nodded. "Well, that's not at all the Lucky I know. No, the boy I know is kind, caring, gentle, and polite. His grandmother is one of my closest friends, and I've seen him grow up over the years into a very fine young man. He must have been having a bad day. Are you sure you didn't provoke him, dear?"

Liz couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Gram! Why do you automatically assume I provoked him? How do you know how he acts when you're not around? Maybe he's just nice to his elders, but around people his own age, he's a jerk! Do you know what he said to me? He told me that women shouldn't be allowed to drive. Now, does that sound like something a nice, polite young man would say?"

Audrey chuckled. "Actually, it sounds like something Luke Spencer would say. Oh, don't look at me like that. Luke is a character. He says things like that to get attention, but he doesn't mean it. The Spencer family is one of the most respected and loved families in Port Charles. Don't judge Lucky based on one day, okay? I promise you, if you give him a chance, he may turn out to be the best friend you've ever had."

Liz looks at her grandmother suspiciously. Why did she act like Lucky's family was so wonderful and perfect? The things he had told her earlier didn't make them sound very perfect at all! She sighed. "Fine, I won't judge him yet. I'm stuck with him all semester anyway, so I might as well get used to the idea."

"That's my girl. Now, what kind of project is this?"

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. She still couldn't believe they had to do this. "It's for home ec. The teacher thinks it will be cute to make everyone get married and spend the semester learning about the responsibility of marriage. It's so stupid."

Audrey smiled. "It doesn't sound so bad. I mean, it's only for school right? What do you have to do?"

"Right now, we have to plan a wedding. The more realistic, the better. She won't give us any guidelines, because she says that real life doesn't tell you what to do. We have until the end of the week. On Friday, she says we are going to actually get married. I wouldn't be surprised if she actually gets a priest and everything!"

Audrey couldn't help but laugh. Her granddaughter always over-dramatized everything. "At the risk of angering you, I think it sounds like fun." Liz looked at her, horrified. "Just let me know if you need any help. I've been to a few weddings in my time, you know!"

"Okay, Gram. Hey - Lucky said that his parents' wedding was, like, the biggest thing here, ever. Is that true, or was he just exaggerating?" She didn't want to act interested, but she couldn't help being curious about some of the things he had said.

Audrey thought for a minute. "Yes, I do believe that their wedding was a very big to-do here. People still talk about it sometimes. It was very extravagant, It took place at the mayor's mansion and everything. Did you know that Luke was the mayor here once?"

Liz was shocked. What hasn't his family done? "No, he didn't mention that."

"Well, their family has been through a lot. You should ask him to tell you about it sometime."

Liz laughed. "That would mean that I would have to talk to him about something other than our project! Sorry, Gram, but I'd rather not."

Liz grabbed a snack and the magazines she bought and went up to her room. She spent an hour looking at pictures of wedding dresses. She had finally chose one that she liked, and was going to move on to the bridesmaids, but was interrupted when Audrey knocked on her door to tell her there was a phone call for her.

She went downstairs, making a mental note to ask for a phone in her room. "Hello?"

"Hi honey! Guess who?" She groaned. His voice was just as annoying over the telephone.
