Chapter 38
Lucky and Elizabeth had avoided each other for the rest of the week, both trying to deny the feelings that had been dredged up at Luke’s on Friday. Now it was Halloween, and Lucky was upstairs getting dressed. He was chuckling to himself, imagining everyone’s reaction to his costume.
A few minutes later, he was walking down the stairs, as he heard a knock on the door. His dad was in the kitchen and his mom was getting Lulu ready, so he answered it. Nikolas and Emily were there, dressed as Romeo and Juliet.
“Cute costume there Nikky,” Lucky teased.
Nikolas looked at him strangely. He thought Lucky had said his costume was going to be totally original. Instead, he was dressed as a vampire. He had makeup on to make his face pale, had sprayed his hair dark, had fake fangs, and was dressed in all black with a cape. “You’re a vampire?” he asked.
Lucky just grinned. “Nope, I’m a Cassidine.”
Emily couldn’t help laughing, and Nikolas just rolled his eyes, figuring he shouldn’t have been surprised.
Lucky ushered them into the living room as Luke came out of the kitchen. He laughed when he saw his son’s costume. “A Cassidine, right?” he asked.
Lucky grinned and nodded, then looked at Nikolas. “See, he got it!”
A few minutes later, Laura came downstairs with Lulu. Nikolas and Lucky gushed over how cute she was for a minute before they heard a knock on the door. “That must be Elizabeth,” Lucky mumbled, not wanting to ansewr it. Noticing his hesitation, Laura just chuckled and answered it herself.
“Hi, Liz. Come on in,” Laura said, wondering what her costume was. She was wearing a blone wig, trendy clothes, and a big crucifix necklace.
Liz saw Lucky and froze. He just looked at her in confusion.
“Liz, what are you supposed to be?” Emily asked, eyeing her costume.
Liz held up her hand to show that she was holding a wooden stake, and Emily burst out laughing. “Ohmigosh, you’re Buffy!”
“Buffy?” Nikolas asked, not sure what that was.
“Buffy, you know, the vampire slayer,” she answered in between fits of laughter. Liz and Lucky just continued to stare at each other in horror.
Finally, Liz found her voice. “A vampire? I thought you said you were going as something original!”
“He’s a Cassidine,” Luke, Nikolas and Emily said in unison. Laura laughed and Liz just shook her head.
“Well, this is going to be fun,” she muttered.
“Lizzie!” Lulu shouted, tired of being ignored.
Liz smiled and turned to look at the little girl. “Lulu, you look so pretty!” She walked over and picked her up, swinging her around.
“I’m a princess,” Lulu said.
“I can see that. Well, you’re the prettiest princess I’ve ever seen!” Liz said, setting her back down on the floor. She looked up to see Lucky smiling at her. “What?”
He shook his head quickly, embarrassed that she had caught him watching her. She was so good with Lulu. “Nothing,” he mumbled, turning back to Nikolas and Emily. “I guess we should get going.”
They all headed for the door as Laura handed Lulu her treat bag. “Have fun you guys!” she called out as they left. Once the door was closed, Luke burst out laughing.
“Oh, darlin’, that was too much. Did you see the looks on their faces when they saw each other’s costumes?”
She smiled and nodded. “Yeah, it was pretty funny. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought they had planned that.”
“Nope, it’s all just fate working,” he answered.
“Right, fate. I doubt that was anything more than coincidence.”
He shook his head. “Oh no. That was fate. And you know what else? Something tells me that I’m going to be a hundred dollars richer by the end of the night!”

“Back off, Dracula. I’m not afraid to use this!” Elizabeth joked, holding up her stake as Lucky approached her.
He laughed and shook his head. “I can’t believe you dressed up as Buffy. I didn’t even know you liked that show.”
“Well, there’s a lot about me you don’t know. How was I supposed to know you’d be a vampire?”
“Cassidine! I’m a Cassidine!”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. To everyone else, you just look like a vampire. We look almost as silly as they do,” she said, pointing at Nikolas and Emily, who were walking ahead of them with Lulu.
“Hey! We heard that!” Emily shouted back at them. They laughed and sped up to join them. Lucky walked next to Nikolas, and Liz went around to walk by Emily.
Nikolas chuckled. “What’s wrong guys? Don’t you want people to think you planned this?”
“No!” they both shouted.
“Aw, I think you guys look cute. Liz is Buffy, and Lucky is Angel!” Emily said happily.
Lucky groaned. “I am not Angel! How many times do I have to tell you guys that I’m..”
“...a Cassidine, we know,” Nikolas answered sarcastically. “But, Lucky, only you and Luke got that. To us normal people you’re just a vampire. You might as well get used to it!”
They took Lulu around for a couple of hours until her bag was nearly bursting with candy, then turned around to go back to the Spencer house. Laura fought with her for a while to get her to go to bed, while the teenagers sat down in the living room to examine their own haul.
“So, Nikky, how did you like trick-or-teating?” Lucky asked.
“It was..interesting. But, I had fun. Thanks for inviting me.”
“Oooh, is that a Kit-Kat?” Liz asked eagerly, looking at the pile of candy in front of Lucky.
“Yeah, what about it?” he asked.
“I’ll trade you for it! I love Kit-Kats!”
He grinned, wondering what he could get out of this. “Well, I don’t know, I mean, I like them too...”
“I’ll give you my Mr. Goodbar,” she said, waving it in front of his face.
He shook his head. “Uh-uh, that’s not enough. Throw in the Snickers and I’ll think about it.”
“What!? But it’s a full-sized one. That’s not a fair trade!”
He shrugged and smiled. ‘”Hey, that’s my offer. Take it or leave it.”
She grumbled and picked up the Snickers bar. “How about we split it? That’s fair, right?”
“Nope. It’s all or nothing.”
“Well, forget it then. I don’t want it that badly.” She looked back at her candy and picked up a miniature Hershey’s and unwrapped it. She glanced over at Lucky and saw that he had opened the Kit-Kat and was preparing to eat it. He looked at her and grinned.
“Last chance....” he said, waving a stick of the candy in the air teasingly.
She rolled her eyes. “Really, I don’t like it that much.”
He waved it in front of her face. “Oh, you know you want it. Come on, take a bite,” he taunted, bringing it in closer to her mouth. She looked at him, wondering why he was acting so weird, then opened her mouth and bit the end off of the stick and giggled.
“Aw, you’re feeding each other already!” Luke joked, coming out of the kitchen and seeing the pair. Emily and Nikolas had been trying to keep quiet, but could do it no longer, and burst out laughing.
