Chapter 12

“What!?!” Laura asked, unable to believe what Lucky just said.

“Lucky, how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that!!!” Liz demanded.

Lucky was laughing too hard at this point to answer. His mother’s reaction was priceless, and Elizabeth’s outburst just made it that much funnier.

Seeing the confusion on Laura’s face, and the state that Lucky was in, Liz decided to answer for him. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Spencer. Lucky was kidding, well, sort of.”

“Sort of? What does that mean?” Laura said before Liz could continue.

“We’re doing a project for home ec class where we have to get married for the semester and learn how to make a marriage work, or something like that. Anyway, Lucky and I got paired up, and that’s what he meant. I’m Elizabeth Webber, by the way.” She extended her hand to his mother, who was very relieved to hear that her son had been pulling her leg.

Laura smiled and shook Liz’s hand. “Webber? Are you by any chance...”

“I’m Jeff Webber’s daughter,” she said before Laura could finish, smiling sweetly. “Lucky already told me about you.” She looked over at him. He had finally managed to contain his laughter, and was wiping away the tears that had been streaming down his face.

“Well, Elizabeth, it’s very nice to meet you.” She turned to her son. “And as for you, young man, don’t ever do that to me again! You nearly gave me a heart attack!”

“Yeah, he’s been doing that a lot today...” Liz muttered.

Lucky snickered and looked apologetically at his mother. “I’m sorry, mom, but I couldn’t help myself. It was too perfect. Anyway, I figured dad had told you already, so I didn’t really think you’d freak out like that.” He started giggling again, and Liz smacked him lightly.

“Oh, stop laughing. It’s not that funny!” she growled, annoyed that he was so amused at what he had just put his mother through.

Laura looked confused. “Your father knew?”

“Yeah, I told him last night.” He looked like there was more to the story, but didn’t want to say anything else. It suddenly dawned on her what it was.

‘Hm, he obviously doesn’t want her to hear this, so I’ll give him a little taste of his own medicine. Let’s see how he feels!’ Laura smiled at her son and he knew what she was going to do. His face paled as she spoke. “Something tells me he gave you the speech about how Spencer men can’t resist Webber women and vice versa. He probably told you that fate put you on this project together so you could fall in love or something, right?”

Lucky’s face had turned a very nice shade of red Elizabeth tried to suppress a giggle. Something told her that her and Laura Spencer were going to get along just fine.

Figuring she should rescue her son now, she turned to Liz. “Don’t worry, there’s really nothing to that theory. Luke thinks that just because it happened with us, that it’s some kind of cosmic law now. If he starts babbling about it, just ignore him.”

Lucky glared at his mother, but knew that she had only done it as payback for scaring her. “Thanks, mom. Would you mind helping us out a little with this? We have to plan the wedding this week, and we’re not sure if we’ve thought of everything.”

“I’d be happy to help. What do you need?” Laura asked, sitting down on the edge of his bed, next to Elizabeth.

They explained what they had covered so far, and she was impressed at how much they had done. Lucky showed her the invitation on his computer, and she agreed with Liz that it wasn’t formal enough. “I just got an invitation to Jax and Chloe’s wedding yesterday. Let me go downstairs and get it. I’ll be right back.” She left the room and hurried downstairs.

“That was mean, you know?” Liz said as soon as Laura was gone.

“What?” He tried to look innocent, like he had no idea what she was talking about.

She rolled her eyes. “What you did to your mom just then. I thought her eyes were going to pop right out of her head!”

“I know, but I couldn’t help it. Anyway, like I said before, I thought my dad would have told her about it. He was so excited when I told him. He’s convinced himself that this was all just fate working. He was driving me crazy last night.”

“Yeah, well, once he sees how much we hate each other, he’ll change his mind.” Liz reasoned.

“I hope so,” Lucky said as Laura came back into the room.

“Here you go, just copy the basics off of this and you should be fine. I have to go start dinner. I’ll try to think about what else you may have missed.” She started to leave, then turned back to Liz. “Oh, Elizabeth, are you staying for dinner?”

Liz looked at Lucky, who was trying not to look horrified at the prospect. She smiled. This could be fun. “I wasn’t planning on it. My grandmother is at the hospital tonight, and I was just going to see if there was anything in the freezer I could heat up....”

Laura smiled. “Well, I insist that you eat here. That way you can meet Luke and LuLu.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Spencer. I’d like that,” she said sweetly as Laura left. She turned and grinned at Lucky. “Well, I guess I’m meeting the in-laws after all!”

He frowned at her. “You did that on purpose! You don’t really want to eat here, you just did it to annoy me!”

She shrugged. “Maybe, maybe not. I really like your mom, though. You definitely didn’t get your personality from her! Let me see that.” She took the invitation out of his hand and went over to the computer. “Well, most of this is okay, except the part with our names. It should have our parents’ names and our full names. Ugh.” She frowned. This wasn’t going to be good. She hated her middle name and rarely told anybody what it was. As much as she wanted to make up a new one, their teacher probably had their full names on the roster, and would know.

Lucky looked over her shoulder at the invitation. “‘Edward and Lila Quartermaine invite you to witness the marriage of their cousin Chloe Marie Morgan to Jasper “Jax” Jacks, son of John and Jane Jacks...’ that’s the way we have to do it?”

“Yeah, I guess so.” She turned and started typing out her parent’s names, then took a deep breath before typing her own. Of course, Lucky was reading over her shoulder, and burst out laughing when she was finished.

“Imogene? That’s your middle name?”

She turned to glare at him. “Yeah, it is. Wanna make something of it?”

He shook his head, still laughing.

“Well, are you going to tell me your full name, or am I going to have to go ask your mother?” She asked angrily. How dare he make fun of her name like that!

He stopped laughing immediately and mumbled his name.

“I couldn’t hear you. Could you please say it louder this time?” His name must be as bad as hers if he was so reluctant to tell her.

He took a deep breath. “It’s Lucas Lorenzo Spencer, Jr.”

She just looked at him for a moment, letting the name sink in, before she started to laugh. “And you were making fun of Imogene? Lucas Lorenzo....whoo, that’s a good one!”

He ran a hand through his hair angrily. “Look, it’s my dad’s name, okay? Why do you think I go by a nickname?”

“Wait, I thought your dad’s name was Luke...oh, I guess that’s a nickname too. Didn’t you say your cousin’s name was Lucas? What is it with your family and that name?”

He rolled his eyes. He knew she was going to do this. “My dad and aunt are very close, so she named her son after him. What’s so weird about that? Most people think it’s sweet.”

She thought for a moment. “Yeah, I guess it is....okay, so it’s Lucas Lorenzo Spencer, Jr.” She snickered again. She typed a little more, then leaned back in the char. “There, it’s perfect now.”

Lucky got up and looked over her shoulder to read the screen. He had to admit, it did look pretty good. “I see you know your way around a computer.”

She shrugged. “A little. Let’s print it out, then go downstairs and see if your mom thought of anything else.“

He nodded reluctantly, not sure if he liked that she seemed to have bonded with his mother so quickly.
