Liz looked over at him and shrugged. “Well, since we’re getting a divorce, there’s nothing to do. I can raise the baby just fine. You don’t have to worry about anything.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Do you honestly think if you’re having my child, that I’m going to just walk away from it?”
Liz was thrown by the passion in his voice. It was obviously a subject that meant more to him than she had realized. “Well, it’s just that you’ve got your whole singing career to worry about. I guess if you want to pay child support or something that would be good, but you don’t have to.”
“Elizabeth, if there’s actually a baby, I’m not going to turn my back on it, or you. I’m going to be a father to it.”
“How? We’re getting divorced!”
He sighed and shook his head. “There are kids everywhere with divorced parents. It’s been known to happen.”
“Before the kid was even born?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Probably. Look, it won’t be ideal, but we’ll make something work. I could take a break from my touring for the first year or so to help raise it, move back to Port Charles. I can afford not to work for a while, and even if I stopped working for good right now, I’d still keep making money off of the record sales and merchandise. That’s the wonderful thing about royalties.” He smiled, trying to cheer her up again.
“But, Lucky, you shouldn’t have to quit singing just because I’m pregnant. It’s not fair to you.”
“Elizabeth, this was as much my fault as yours, although I have this weird feeling that you were the one that started the whole drinking thing....”
“Me? Excuse me, but all I have to do is look at your father to know which one of us is more likely to be the lush!”
“Now you’re calling me a lush?” he asked, sitting up again. “Just because my dad likes to drink doesn’t mean I do!”
Liz sat up as well, leaning closer to him as she argued. “Maybe not, but I seem to remember you throwing them back like candy that night!” She stopped suddenly, a look of shock on her face.
“What did you just say?” Lucky asked cautiously.
“I remember....oh no....you were right, it was me. I remember finding the mini bar... I started it.” She covered her face in embarrassment, trying not to laugh at the insanity of the whole thing.
“What else do you remember?” he asked anxiously, pulling her hands away from her face to look into her eyes. “Anything?”
She shook her head. “No, just bottles. Lots and lots of little bottles. And Ross.”
Lucky frowned. “Ross? Who’s Ross?”
“Um, I don’t know, the name just popped into my head.” She chewed on her lip, racking her brain. “Oh! From Friends, the TV show. He was there, or something like that. I can’t remember, it’s still really blurry.”
“Maybe we were watching TV and Friends came on,” he suggested, trying to jog some of her memory.
“Maybe...you know, that makes sense, because all night tonight, there was something about sitting so close to Jennifer Aniston that was bugging me. It was like I knew there was something I was forgetting about her, but I couldn’t quite bring the memory up.”
Lucky nodded, thinking. “I feel like there’s more to that, something else important...”
“Me too, but why would a TV show have anything to do with that night?”
He shrugged and flopped back on the bed. “I have no idea!”
Liz sighed and stood up. “Maybe we should just go to bed. We can talk about it more in the morning before I have to leave, but I’m suddenly beat.”
“Yeah, that sounds like a plan.”
She went into the bathroom, grabbing her nightshirt on the way. A few minutes later, she came out and hung up her dress, then turned to look at Lucky, who was still laying in bed, fully-dressed.
“What?” he asked, wondering why she was staring at him.
“Are you going to sleep in those leather pants? Because, maybe it’s just me, but they don’t exactly look comfortable!”
He laughed and got up. “Almost forgot about that. I guess I should change too.” After a quick change in the bathroom, he returned to find Liz already in bed. He turned off the light and slid in next to her, rolling onto his side to face her.
“Good night.”
“Night, Lucky,” she said, smiling at him. “I had fun tonight, thanks.”
“Well, it would have looked pretty strange if my wife wasn’t with me, don’t you think?”
She chuckled. “I guess so. I still can’t believe I actually sat next to Brad Pitt the whole time! I’d say it was perfect, if it weren’t for the way it ended...” her voice dropped as she remembered why they had come back to the hotel early in the first place.
“Look, don’t think about that right now. Why don’t you make an appointment at GH once you get home and have yourself checked out?”
“I think I’ll try an EPT or something first. With my luck, someone will see me there and tell Luke. Do you really want him knowing about this?”
He groaned and shook his head. “No way. Okay, but will you promise me that if the test comes out positive, that you’ll go to a doctor?”
Liz smiled at his concern. “Sure. It never hurts to get a second opinion, right?”
“Right.” They fell silent for a few minutes, but neither could fall asleep.
“Hey, Lucky?” Liz asked quietly, not sure if he was still awake.
“Hm?”
“Do you realize that this might be the last night we ever have to share a bed?”
“What about when I get back to Port Charles? The divorce can’t be that quick, can it?” he asked.
“Well, no, but I doubt Charisma will still be staying in the house, so you would be able to go back to the guest room.”
“Oh. Good point,” he said, trying to ignore the disappointment he was feeling.
Liz let out a little sigh as she struggled with the conflicting emotions inside of her. She was happy to have a reprieve from the marriage fiasco, but at the same time, knowing she’d be leaving Lucky in the morning, and not seeing him for three weeks, was somehow making her almost sad.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing, why?”
“I thought I heard you sigh, like something was bothering you.”
“Oh, that. Um, I guess it’s just the baby thing again,” she lied.
Lucky rolled onto his side to face her. “Try to stop thinking about it tonight, there’s nothing either of us can do until we know for sure, so why get yourself all tied up in knots so early?”
Liz looked over at him and smiled. “You’re right, I just need to forget about....everything. We should just be happy that this thing is almost over. I leave in the morning and everything can go back to normal for both of us.”
“Right, back to normal,” he sighed, rolling onto his back again and staring at the ceiling. “It’s going to be weird.”
“What is?”
“You being gone. I mean, I don’t know, I guess I got kind of used to you always being around. Even if you do annoy me.”
She smacked him playfully, but couldn’t help smiling. “You annoy me even more, but I know what you mean. It’ll be weird being back in Port Charles while you’re still on the road. I’m starting to wonder if Alexis was right about starting to think it’s real after a while.”
Lucky chuckled softly. “Me too. You know what else is going to be weird?”
“What?”
“Sleeping alone again. I think I got used to falling asleep next to you. Don’t take that the wrong way, I just meant having another person there, you know?”
She nodded. “I know. I was thickening that too. Have we gone crazy or something? I mean, here we are, only hours away from finally putting this mess behind us, and we’re talking about how we’re going to miss it!”
“I think we’ve been crazy ever since Vegas. Like you said, we’re just used to it, we’re getting confused with what’s real and what’s pretend, that’s all. Right?” He looked over at her again, waiting for confirmation.
“Yeah, of course. Maybe we should just go to sleep. Everything will probably make more sense in the morning.” She hoped she sounded more convinced than she felt.
Lucky looked over at her and nodded. “Sounds like a plan. Good night....again.”
She smiled, looking into his eyes. “Night.”
They stayed like that for a minute, just gazing at one another, until Liz broke the silence.
“Lucky?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you remember what you said tonight, in that last acceptance speech?”
“What part of it?”
“The end. About me,” she replied softly, not sure why she was asking.
“Um, I think so. What about it?”
“Why did you say that? I mean, you didn’t have to say all of that.”
“I know. It just sort of came out, like an ad-lib, I guess. I’m sorry if it freaked you out or anything.”
She smiled a little and shook her head. “No. It was actually kind of sweet. No one’s ever said anything like that to me before. I mean, I know it was just the act, but it was still kind of nice.”
“Oh, well, I’m glad you liked it, then. Although, my dad probably loved it!”
“Yeah, I’m sure he did,” she laughed. “I’m almost afraid to go back. If it wasn’t for Kelly’s, I might be tempted to stay here.”
“Really? You’d actually want to keep touring with me?” he asked, surprised.
“Sure. It’s fun. Meeting celebrities doesn’t hurt, either.”
He laughed and shook his head. “I’m sure it doesn’t. But what about the other stuff? Having to act married all day, having to share the bedroom every night? Don’t you want a break from that?”
“Well, yeah, of course, but I don’t know....I’m kind of used to it now. It’s not so bad anymore. You’re kind of comfortable to sleep with, actually.”
“I am?” he asked with a small smirk. “You better be careful, I might start to think you actually like me.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that, just because you’re comfy doesn’t mean my feeling have changed!”
“Well, since it’s our last night and all, I wouldn’t want to deprive you of your comfort.” He held out his arm towards her. “Come here.”
“What?” she asked, looking at him strangely. He brought his arm around her and pulled her over, letting her head rest on his shoulder. “Comfy?”
She chuckled and wrapped her arm lightly around his waist. “Yeah, actually, I am. Thanks.”
“It’s the least I can do,” he said softly, leaning down to rest his cheek on the top of her head. “Now, go to sleep.”
She didn’t respond, because she already was asleep. Lucky smiled and let out a small sigh, then closed his eyes, quickly drifting off as well.
