Lucky sighed and stepped back from her, partially relieved that they were interrupted. Things were complicated enough between them. Kissing would have only made it worse.
“Food’s here,” Liz whispered, still gazing into his eyes. Lucky nodded and turned to the door, silently cursing the hotel’s kitchen for being so fast.
They ate in silence, neither sure what to talk about. When they were done, Lucky escaped to the bathroom to shower, while Liz sat in front of the TV, idly flipping through the stations. A short while later, Lucky came out, his hair damp and his chest still glistening from the steam.
“I think I left some hot water if you need it,” he joked, pointing towards the empty bathroom.
Liz shook her head, her attention focused on the television in order to keep herself from gawking at him. “I’ll take mine in the morning.”
“Okay. Well, I’m beat, so I’m going to go to bed. Don’t worry about watching TV, I can sleep through anything.”
“Thanks. I wanted to check out the Late Show tonight, see how badly I embarrassed myself.”
He chuckled as he slipped into the bed. “You were fine, don’t worry about it.”
She turned to smirk at him. “Okay, then I’ll watch to see how badly you embarrassed yourself instead!”
Lucky groaned and threw one of the bed’s many pillows at her. She caught it deftly and grinned. “Thanks!” She put it on the floor and laid down, stretching out in front of the television. Lucky rolled his eyes and shut off the light, determined to forget about what had almost happened between them and get some sleep. He had a long day tomorrow.

“Hurry up, it’s starting,” Luke urged, quickly waving Carly into the house.
“Calm down, Luke, the guests don’t come on right away. We’ve got time!” she laughed, making her way to the couch. “Hi, Laura.”
“Carly,” Laura greeted. “Where’s Jason?”
“He stayed at home with Michael. He thought it was silly to come all the way over here to watch something that we could see there. He doesn’t know the truth about them, so he doesn’t understand what the big deal is,” she explained.
“Will he be here tomorrow?” Luke asked, sinking down into his chair while Dave was doing his monologue. He had no interest in the rest of the show, he just wanted to watch Lucky’s part.
“Yeah, I managed to convince him to come for that. Is everything set?”
“Yep. Everyone said they’d be here. It might be kind of crowded, but it’ll be fun. Right, babe?”
Laura rolled her eyes and stared ahead at the TV. “Yeah, fun. I don’t know why you invited so many people.”
“What do you mean? My kid’s up for a bunch of awards, I want everyone to be here when he wins them,” Luke answered innocently.
“Sh, guys, he’s starting with the guests!” Carly said, cutting them off. They fell silent and turned back to the TV anxiously, wondering if Lucky would be first.
“Oh, it’s just that Buffy girl,” she sighed, sitting back in disappointment.
“Wait, did you say Buffy?” Laura asked. Carly nodded, not sure why she cared. “Luke, didn’t Lucky say something about doing a movie with her once?”
Luke’s face lit up at the memory. “Baby, you’re right! He did say he was going to be in one of those sappy chick flicks with her. They only filmed about half of it before it got nixed, though. I wonder if Liz knows her hubby had to do love scenes with Buffy?”
“Love scenes?” Carly asked, raising her eyebrows. “Oh, this is good!”
They returned their attention to the show, snickering as Dave started to ask her about the movie, wishing they could see Liz’s face. Before going to commercial, he announced that Lucky would be the next guest. Luke jumped up from his chair and rushed into the kitchen for a drink. He hurried back out a minute later.
The show came back and Dave launched into his introduction. “All right, my next guest is only 22 years old and is already an international rock star. Lucky, get out here!”
Carly let out a little whoop and slid forward in her seat, completely transfixed by the television. They all chuckled at the way Lucky greeted Sarah Michelle Gellar, once again wishing they could see Liz.
When Dave started questioning Lucky about his name, Luke couldn’t help laughing. His expression when Lucky told him they were running from the mob was priceless.
“So, what did your family do to get chased by the mob?” Dave asked.
They watched as Lucky leaned forward, closer to Dave. “If I told you, I’d have to kill you.”
“That’s my boy!” Luke exclaimed proudly, laughing. They went on to discuss the awards the following evening, then Dave brought up the subject everyone was waiting for: Lucky’s new wife.
“Okay, now we’re getting somewhere,” Luke said, rubbing his hands together excitedly.
“Oh my gosh, look, Dave’s bringing her up onto the stage!” Carly shouted, pointing at the screen. They all leaned forward and watched as Dave flirted with her, noticing the brief look of jealousy that flashed across Lucky’s face.
“Oh, this is too much!” Luke chuckled, shaking his head as Dave kicked Lucky out of his chair so Liz could sit next to his desk. He was even more amused at the way Liz dodged the question of Lucky’s last name. A few years ago, he had told them that he dropped it from his stage name in order to protect his family’s privacy, and he had stuck by that ever since, always refusing to tell anyone. When Letterman started to grill Liz about it, they weren’t sure how she would answer.
“Webber, but that’s my maiden name. Nice try.”
“Oh yes, she’s definitely a true Spencer,” Luke grinned.
Dave then moved on, asking how they fell in love, which elicited a few snickers from the trio. Liz answered the question smoothly, and he went on to ask about their Vegas wedding.
“Okay, this should be good,” Luke mumbled.
“We were being impulsive, I guess,” Lucky answered.
“Are you sure you weren’t just drunk?” Dave asked.
They all burst out laughing as Liz nearly choked on her water.
“I guess we know for sure now,” Carly said, still laughing. “That was too much! She almost blew their cover.”
Once Liz had recovered, Lucky got up to sing, throwing a last glance over to where Liz and Dave were deep in conversation, and they were pretty sure they saw more jealousy there.
“The boy might as well just face it, he’s hopelessly in love with her,” Carly noted, shaking her head and smiling.
“So is she,” Laura added, remembering how Liz had looked at Sarah Michelle Gellar earlier in the show.
“Oh yes, these awards tomorrow should be very interesting, indeed,” Luke said, going into the kitchen for another drink.

Lucky woke up and looked around the room in confusion. It was still dark, so he glanced at the clock: 3:26 am.
He sat up and squinted at the TV, which was still on, although the volume was so low, he could barely hear it. “Don’t tell me you’re still up!”
There was no answer, so he got up and peered over the edge of the bed, chuckling when he saw Liz on the floor, curled up in a ball and sound asleep.
“You owe me for this,” he mumbled, walking over to her. He reached down and lifted her from the floor, trying his best not to wake her, then carried her back to the bed. Once he had set her down on the bed, he covered her with the blankets and went back to retrieve the pillow from the floor. He then shut off the TV and returned to his side of the bed.
Lucky rolled onto his side and studied her sleeping profile, amazed that she hadn’t woken up at all when he had been moving her. He sighed, wondering what would have happened if he had kissed her earlier. Would they have just gone back to normal, fighting with each other as if nothing happened? Or would everything have changed between them? Thanks to room service, he might never know.
