Chapter 82

Lucky sighed and looked up the stairs, silently debating whether or not to go up there. Finally, he made his way up to Liz’s room, figuring that if they were going to make it through this next week, they couldn’t start it fighting.

“Can I come in?” he asked, knocking lightly on the open door. Liz stepped out of the bathroom and frowned at him.

“Are you here to lecture me again about my packing habits?” she grumbled sarcastically.

Rolling his eyes, he stepped into the room and took a seat on the edge of her bed. “No, believe it or not, I came up to apologize.”

She stared at him in disbelief for a moment. “Really?”

“I’m not saying I was totally wrong, though. I mean, you did wait until the last minute to pack, but that still wasn’t an excuse for me to yell at you.”

Liz smiled, relieved to hear him say that. “Well, thanks. I guess I should apologize for yelling at you, too.”

He shrugged. “You were just defending yourself. Why don’t we just forget about the whole thing?”

“Sounds good to me.” She sighed and looked around. “I think I’m finally done here. When do we leave?”

Lucky glanced at his watch. “An hour. You know, that was our first fight.”

“Lucky, we’ve been fighting for years! That was far from our first!” she said, laughing as she tried to zip up her suitcase.

“Yeah, but this was the first actual fight we had since we’ve been married.”

“I guess so. Damn, I hate this thing!” she grumbled, punching her suitcase in frustration.

Lucky got up to help her, reaching for the zipper. “You know, they say the best part of fighting is making up,” he teased. As he grabbed for the zipper, so did she, and they ended up with their hands entwined.

Liz looked up at him in surprise as a shock passed through her body from the contact. “Um, maybe we should pass on that.”

He quickly let go of her hand, stepping back. “Yeah, good idea. Um, I guess I’ll go wait downstairs.”

She nodded, looking away as she finally managed to get the suitcase closed. Lucky started to walk out of the room, then remembered part of the reason he had come up there in the first place.

“Oh, I almost forgot. I called Alexis earlier.”

“How’s the divorce going?” she asked hopefully, dragging the heavy suitcase off of the bed. Lucky jumped to her side and grabbed it, seeing that she wasn’t going to be able to lift it easily.

“It’s going slowly, sounds like. But, there is one thing she needs from us before she can finish.” He gasped as he tried to pick up the bag. “Man, what did you pack? Do you have a brick collection or somthing that I don’t know about?”

“It’s just clothes. If you’re going to complain about it, don’t carry it. I was doing fine on my own.”

“Sure you were,” he joked. “I’ve got it, let’s just go downstairs.”

“So what does Alexis need from us?” Liz asked, following Lucky as he made his way slowly down to the living room.

“She said we need to decide what you’re getting in the settlement.”

“Settlement?”

“Yeah, she claims that even though we’ve only been married a few days, you’re still entitled to part of my estate.”

“Oh.” She walked over to the couch and sat down, thinking over the implications of what he had just told her. “You know what? I don’t want anything.”

“You don’t?” he asked, shocked. He had expected her to take advantage of the situation and at least ask for some money.

“Yeah, I mean, it wasn’t a real marriage, why should I get anything? Anyway, I don’t need your money. I have my own.”

Before he could reply, the door opened and Charisma walked in. She smiled when she saw them together and no longer fighting.

“Good, you made up. Are you ready to go?”

“I thought we still had time,” Liz said, not wanting to leave yet.

“We still need to get to the airport. Better to be early than late, right?” she argued, opening the door. They both followed reluctantly, unable to argue with her reasoning. Liz stepped outside and gasped as she saw the stretch limousine waiting at the curb.

Knowing that Charisma was watching, Lucky stepped up behind Liz and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Have you ever been in one of those before?”

Speechless, not only from the limo, but also from Lucky suddenly being so close to her, she shook her head.

“Well, come on then. What are we waiting for?” he asked, taking her hand and pulling her over to the car. She paused and looked back at their bags, which were still sitting on the front porch. He chuckled, tugging her to the car. “The driver will get those.”

The driver held the door open for them as they ducked into the car. Once tehy were safely inside, he closed it and went over to retrieve their luggage, leaving them alone.

“Wow,” Liz breathed, looking around the spacious interior of the car. “You ride in these a lot?”

He shrugged, laying his arm across the back of their seat. “Occasionally. Come here.” He motioned for her to lean back against him.

“What?” she asked, not sure what he was asking.

“Charisma’s probably going to get in soon. We should be sitting closer together.”

“Oh, right.” She sighed and scooted over next to him, leaning her head back against his shoulder. He tightened his arm around her, pulling her in, and she couldn’t help noticing how comfortable he was.

“See, that’s not so terrible, is it?” he teased, looking down at her.

Liz lifted her head to look at him and smiled. “No, I guess not.” Their gaze locked for a moment as he slowly leaned down to her, cradling her face with his free hand as he met her lips in a passionate kiss. He had no idea what possessed him to do it, but it was too late to stop.

Liz was surprised at first, but quickly lost herself in the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck and puling him down to deepen it.

“Man, do you two ever stop?” Charisma joked as she climbed into the car, assuming they had seen her coming and were just putting on a show. They broke apart, looking over at her guiltily. Their faces were flushed and their breathing was slightly labored, and she knew that the kiss she had just interrupted had been real this time.

“Sonny, we shouldn’t do this,” Alexis gasped as he pulled her over to the leather couch.

“Why not?” He gently threw her down and lowered himself on top of her, kissing her neck as he tugged at her shirt.

“I’m supposed to be working,” she insisted weakly, closing her eyes as he began to unbutton her blouse.

“Private consultation,” he whispered.

“My secretary....”

“...won’t be back for a while,” he assured her, finally getting the last button and letting her shirt fall open.

“What if a client comes by?”

Sonny stopped and sat up, looking down at her for a moment, then leaned back and reached for the door. He turned the lock and grinned.

“Anything else?”

Alexis smiled and shook her head, then grabbed him by the lapels of his jacket and pulled him back down, finally giving in to her desires.
