Chapter 71

“Oh, come on Dad,” Lucky sighed, pulling Liz to the table. “We all know this was your idea, don’t try to put it on Mom!”

Luke shrugged, grinning at his wife. “Hey, can’t blame a guy for trying. Well, we might as well dig in.” He sat down at the table, motioning for Laura to do the same. They all began to eat quietly, not sure what to talk about.

Halfway through breakfast, the doorbell rang. Liz jumped up, nearly knocking over her chair in the process.

“I’ll get it!” she said, hurrying out of the room. Luke chuckled to himself as he watched her go.

“She got a hot date or something?” he joked, turning to his son.

“Funny, Dad,” he grumbled, looking back at his plate in annoyance. He had been dying for a n excuse to get away from this happy family breakfast, but she had beat him to it.

A minute later, Liz returned to the kitchen carrying a huge vase of white roses, her eyes wide. Lucky smiled and stood up to take them from her.

“So, who sent these?”

“Um, Sarah McLachlan,” she answered nervously, still staring at the flowers.

Lucky nodded and set them in the middle of the table. “Yeah, I had a feeling she’d send something like this soon. She’s always doing stuff like that.”

Liz plopped down in her seat again, still awestruck. “I love her... I mean, her music, I love her music.”

“Oh!” Lucky gasped, jumping up and hurrying out of the room. Liz frowned, wondering where he went, but he returned a second later carrying a CD. “Dad, this came for you last night. It’s from B.B.”

Luke smiled as he took it, studying the cover. “Wow, I’m surprised he remembered! What did he give you two?”

“Um, bottle of wine,” Lucky mumbled, sitting down again.

“Too bad it’s still early, or I’d say we crack that baby open!” Luke suggested, smiling knowingly at Laura.

“No!” Liz and Lucky both shouted, startling them. “I mean, we want to save it,” Lucky added, looking back at his food.

“Thanks for the breakfast guys,” Lucky said, pushing his parents to the front door. “We’d love you to stay, but we have a million things to do today, right honey?”

Liz stepped up next to him and smiled, taking his hand. “Yeah, a million things. But thanks, it was delicious.”

“Well, we were glad to do it,” Laura said, hugging Lucky, then reaching over for Liz. “Let us know if you need anything, okay?”

“We will. Thanks, Laura.”

“Hey, what did we tell you about that?” Luke scolded.

She smiled sheepishly and cleared her throat. “Sorry, I forgot. Thanks, Mom. You too, Dad.”

They both beamed at her and nodded. “You’re very welcome, sweetheart,” Laura said, hugging her again on impulse. “We’ll see you both later.”

“Bye guys,” Lucky said, pushing them out the door. He closed it behind them and sighed, leaning against it. “I thought they’d never leave!”

Liz snickered and walked back into the living room. She fell onto the couch and sighed. “Is this what it’s going to be like now? People dropping in all the time to test us?”

“No, just my dad. I think everyone else believes us.” He walked over and sat next to her. “I guess we should call Alexis now.”

“Right, we should get that over with as soon as possible. Can you hand me the phone?”

Lucky shook his head, groaning. “I’m too full to move.”

“But it’s right next to you!”

“It’s your house,” he argued.

“What does that have to do with anything? Anyway, you live here too, for now. Just give me the stupid phone!”

He shook his head again. Liz sighed and leaned over him, reaching for it. Unable to get it on her first try, she leaned farther, laying across his lap. He looked down at her and chuckled.

“What’s so funny?” she growled, finally getting the phone and looking over her shoulder at him.

“Just thinking my Dad should be here to see this. For some reason I feel like I should be spanking you or something.”

Realizing how she was positioned, she quickly sat up and frowned at him. “If you even lay a finger on me, I’ll beat you with this phone!”

“Oh, don’t worry, I have no intention of ever touching you. Well, except for when we’re acting married, but that’s all.”

“Good. Now, what’s her number?”

“Who?”

She sighed and rolled her eyes. “Hello, short-term memory! Alexis! Divorce, remember?”

He shrugged and pointed at the phone book next to the base of the phone. “Why don’t you let your fingers do the walking?”

“Oh, that was cute,” she said, groaning at his lame joke. “Let me guess, you’re not going to get that for me, either?” He shook his head and smiled. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were just trying to get me to lay on you again.”

“What guy wouldn’t want to have a beautiful woman in his lap?” he asked, not realizing what he had just said until it was too late. Liz had just grabbed the book and was sitting up again when she froze and stared at him.

“A what?”

“Um, nothing.” He took the book from her and began flipping through it, quickly finding the phone number. “Here.”

She took the book from him, staring at him in confusion as he stood up and began to pace the small room. Seeing that he wasn’t going to say anything more, she read the number and dialed, hoping Alexis could see them right away.

“Miss Davis? Hi, it’s Elizabeth We-, um, Elizabeth Spencer. I was wondering if you had some time today to see me and...my husband? Sure, one sounds good. We’ll be there. Thanks.”

She hung up and sighed. “Okay, she can meet us at one. I guess we better get dressed.”

Lucky nodded and hurried to the stairs. “Right. Dressed.”

Liz sat back and watched the passing scenery as they drove to the hotel. Alexis was living in her old suite again, and conducted most of her business from there. “So, what are we going to tell her? I mean, just yesterday we were the perfect picture of newlyweds. She’s not going to believe that overnight we changed our minds!”

Lucky shrugged as they turned into the parking lot. “Might as well just tell her the truth. As our lawyer, she’s bound to secrecy, so I don’t have to worry about the press finding out. By the time the divorce is processed, enough time should have passed for us to have a good excuse.”

“I just feel so silly about this whole thing. What’s she going to think when we tell her we got so drunk that we woke up married, with no memory at all of what happened?”

He smiled and turned off the car. “She’ll probably laugh a little, but can you blame her?”

“I guess not.” She sighed and opened the car door to get out. “Okay, let’s get this over with.”
