Chapter 64

“Lucky!” Elizabeth said, trying to wake him up. He had fallen asleep while she was driving, and his head had ended up on her shoulder. For some reason, she hadn’t been able to bring herself to move him, so she drove the rest of the way back to Port Charles with him resting on her. They were almost home, and her arm was starting to fall asleep, so she decided it was time to wake him. Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite as easy as she had thought it would be.

“Lucky!” she called out again, raising her voice and moving her shoulder to shake him.

He groaned and moved a little, but continued to sleep. She shook him again, giving up on the gentle approach.

“Lucky! Wake up!”

“Huh?” he mumbled, opening his eyes. He lifted his head sleepily and looked around. “Where are we?”

“Almost home. You fell asleep a while ago on my shoulder,” she said, a hint of amusement in her voice.

“Oh, um, sorry.” He sat up and stretched, trying to wake himself up. “How close are we?”

“I think it’s the next exit. I can’t wait to get there so I can finally go home, put on clean clothes, and sleep in my own bed!” she said excitedly, turning off the highway. “I never realized how much I love that bed until now.”

Lucky chuckled and rubbed his eyes. “Well, you know what they say: you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

She smiled and turned a corner, then glanced over at him. “Isn’t that an old 80’s song?”

He nodded, laughing. “Yeah, now that you mention it, it’s an old Cinderella song. I have to say, I’m impressed.”

“Why? Because I recognized the song title?”

“Well, yeah. I’m in the music business, and I didn’t even realize it. Anyway, I have to agree with you about that bed thing. That little room over Kelly’s may not be four-star, but it’s home right now, and I miss it.”

“Here’s your street,” she announced turning again. A minute later, they were pulling up in front of the Spencers’ house, which was surrounded by cars. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say it was some kind of party,” Lucky said, frowning. Something was up, he could feel it, and he didn’t like it one bit. “We’re going to have to go in, they’ve got your car blocked.”

“Yeah, I noticed,” she grumbled, parking Lucky’s car along the curb. “You know, you don’t have to go in. All I have to do is ask them to move their cars. Maybe you should escape while you can.”

Lucky smiled and shook his head as he opened the door to get out of the car. “Oh no, I’ve waited days to tell off my dad for this, I’m not waiting any longer. Party or not, he’s going to get a piece of my mind now!”

“Is everyone here?” Luke asked, gazing around the crowded room.

“I think so,” Laura responded, going over the guest list in her head. “Yeah, looks like it. When did Lucky say they’d get here?”

“Just sometime in the afternoon. I hope it’s soon, or else these people are going to start getting restless.”

“They’ll be fine. They all seem to be having a good time just talking to each other,” she noted, walking away to say hello to Nikolas.

“So, do you believe this?” V asked, walking up to Jax. “I mean, I didn’t even know they were going out!”

He smiled, turning to her, taking a sip of his champagne. “I know, the last time I saw them together was that auction, and they didn’t exactly seem very friendly to each other. Weren’t they fighting the whole night?”

“Maybe that was it. Maybe all that passion they had for each other when they fought just turned into love instead. It happens, from what I’ve heard.”

“Hey,” Sonny said quietly, approaching Alexis at the other end of the room. Ever since they had kissed after the Bachelor Auction, he hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind. She had hurried out of the penthouse afterwards, saying something about having too many men to deal with, that she didn’t need one more complicating things. He knew about her phony marriage to Jax a few years back, and how it had put a strain on her relationship with Ned. Ever since the divorce, she hadn’t been able to decide who she wanted to be with, if she even wanted either of them at all.

“Hey,” Alexis responded nervously, not sure how to act around Sonny any more. Whenever she saw him, all she could think about was how much she wanted to kiss him again. She knew it was wrong, that she had enough problems in her life just dealing with her conflicting feelings for Jax and Ned. The last thing she needed was Sonny making things even more complicated!

“I’m surprised to see you here. I mean, Luke isn’t exactly known for inviting Cassidines into his home,” he said with a small smile.

She felt like she was going to melt right there as he flashed his dimples at her. “Um, well, I think I’m the only one of us he can stand. Except for Nikolas, he finally managed to accept him, too. I wouldn’t worry too much about him until you see Stefan or Helena in here,” she joked, immediately falling into an easy rhythm with him.

“I’m still shocked about Lucky and Liz. Every time I see them, they’re at each other’s throats, and the next thing I know, Luke’s telling me they got married! I wonder if he’s up to something.”

“Well, I wouldn’t put it past him. I guess we’ll just have to wait until they get here and see what they have to say about it.”

Charisma walked up to Luke and smiled, looking around the room. “Nice turnout you got here. Especially for such short notice.”

“What can I say, people love me!” he exclaimed with a grin. “Okay, so they love my kid, but who cares about details? I just wish they’d get here soon. All this mingling is giving me hives.”

“So, do you think they’ll go along with it, or tell everyone it was a mistake/”

“I’m sure when he finds out that the media knows, he’ll go along with it. From what I gather, it’s not exactly good for the career to get drunk, run off to Vegas, and marry the first girl you see! Besides, we all got them presents, and everyone knows that once presents have been given, it’s much harder to go back on something!” He chuckled and looked around the room, waving at Carly, who was standing over by the front door with Jason.

“So, they really got married?” Jason was asking, still unable to believe it. Carly nodded, hating that she was lying to him, but she knew that if he knew the truth, he wouldn’t agree to go along with it.

“I know, I was shocked too. I always thought they hated each other.”

Jason thought for a moment, then sighed. “Well, he did kiss her once, and at that auction they were pretty close when they were dancing. Maybe I just didn’t want to let myself see it back then, because I was still with Liz.”

“That’s probably it,” Carly said, trying to keep a straight face. “If you don’t want to stay, it’s okay. I’m sure everyone would understand.”

“No, I’m fine. If she’s happy, then I’m happy for her.” Before he could say anything further, the doorknob started to turn, and the room fell silent as everyone held their breath, waiting to see if it was them.

“You know, all I wanted to do was go home,” Liz whined, walking up the sidewalk behind Lucky. “Why does everything have to be so difficult?”

“Don’t worry, we’ll just ask them to move their cars, and we can both go. I may not even bother yelling at my dad yet. I’d rather just go back to my apartment for now.”

“Hm, you don’t think he knows anything, do you?” she asked thoughtfully, starting to get a bad feeling about all the cars out front.

“Elizabeth, stop worrying. Trust me, he doesn’t suspect a thing. He bought my story about you being sick, so we’re just going to stick with that, okay?”

They stopped in front of the door and Lucky reached for the knob, figuring it would be unlocked. Liz sighed and looked over at him, a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach. “Yeah, sure. Let’s just get this over with.”

Lucky turned the knob and pushed open the door, expecting to see the room full of people, but totally unprepared for what came next.

“Surprise!” they all yelled, throwing rice at him and Liz as they stepped into the house. They looked at one another in confusion as Luke and Laura rushed over to them.

“Congratulations, Cowboy,” Luke said proudly, patting him on the back as Laura pulled Liz into a hug.

“Congratulations, honey, welcome to the family!” she said emotionally, trying not to laugh at the horrified expressions on their faces.

Once Laura released her, Liz looked over at Lucky and hissed, “Doesn’t suspect a thing, huh?”
