Chapter 35
Lucky came down from his room after sleeping in and saw Nikolas sitting on the couch, reading a book to Lulu. “Hey,” he greeted, smiling at them as he walked past, into the kitchen. He made himself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the table, glancing over the morning paper while he ate. A few minutes later, Nikolas came in and sat down across from him.
“Did you know there are more witches in town?” he asked.
Lucky shook his head. “No, who?”
“They’re from out of town. Three sisters from California. They’re cute, too, but don’t tell Emily I said that!”
Lucky laughed. “No problem. Hey, are they all brunette, and their names all begin with P? I can’t remember the names exactly, but I met three sisters yesterday in the lobby of the hotel.”
“Yeah, that sounds like them. You didn’t know they were witches?”
“No, they were talking to Elizabeth. How did you find out about them? I mean, I don’t think they would go around advertising it, right?”
“One of them can freeze time, and I guess when she does it, other witches don’t freeze. It was kind of creepy. I was in Kelly’s with my father, and she knocked over a glass, and froze everything.”
“Wow, everything freezes?” Lucky asked, impressed. “I thought it was cool that I could freeze things, but I can’t do an entire room!”
“Yeah, well, I was sort of thrown by it, but they knew right away that since I was still able to move, I was a witch. We talked for a few minutes, then she unfroze the place because she saw Alexis coming in.”
“That’s cool. I’ve never met another witch that wasn’t family before. I hope I run into them sometime while they’re here.”
“Run into who?” Luke asked, walking into the kitchen. He frowned when he saw Nikolas sitting there. “Hey, Broomhilda.” Nikolas rolled his eyes, but otherwise ignored him.
“There are some new witches in town,” Lucky answered. “Nikolas met them yesterday.”
“Really? Any relation?”
“I don’t think so. They’re from California, isn’t that what you said?”
Nikolas nodded. “Yeah.”
“Oh, wait, I just remembered something!” Lucky said suddenly. “They said something about Hannah being their cousin.”
Luke chuckled and grabbed a soda from the fridge. “You know, that explains so much!” The doorbell rang before he could elaborate. “Cowboy, I don’t suppose you’d like to get that for me?”
Lucky sighed and stood up. “Sure, you’re obviously busy,” he said sarcastically, pushing open the kitchen door and stomping out of the room. He opened the front door, expecting someone to be there trying to sell him something.
“Elizabeth!” he greeted, surprised, his mood suddenly shifting. “Come in.” He stepped aside, letting her into the house, then closed the door.
“Hey, Lucky. I’m sorry to just barge in like this, but things have been kind of crazy lately. Is the rest of your family here?”
“My dad is, and Nikolas. They’re in the kitchen, why?”
“I’ll tell you when we get there, come on.” She started for the kitchen, leaving Lucky no choice but to follow.
“Hey, Liz,” Luke greeted happily when she walked in. It was always good to have another mortal in the room, made him feel less overpowered. Little did he know how wrong he was about her.
“Hi,” she said. “Something came up that has forced my mother to move her wedding to this Saturday, so I’ve been hand-delivering her invitations today. So,” she handed one to Luke, and another to Nikolas, “here you go. Your whole family is invited, and we hope you’ll be able to make it.” She looked at Lucky while saying the last part and smiled.
“Of course we will,” Lucky said immediately. Luke turned to him and snickered at his enthusiasm.
“I don’t know, Spencers at a Cassidine wedding? To a Quartermaine, no less? Wait, this place doesn’t have any parapets, does it?”
Liz frowned in confusion. “Parapets? No, I don’t think so, why?”
Luke shrugged. “It’s just that Cassidines and weddings don’t mix well when there’s a parapet around. Ask your mother about it sometime, I’m sure she’ll be happy to fill you in.”
“Okay...” Liz said, totally lost. “Anyway, we’re sorry for the short notice, but this all happened very suddenly. Do you think you’ll be there?”
Luke glanced back at Lucky, knowing he would kill him if he said no. He turned back to Liz and grinned. “Wouldn’t miss it. This could be fun, actually, watching the Q’s and the Cassidines become one big, happy family.” He chuckled at the thought.
“Great,” she said, turning to leave. “Thanks, I’ll see you all on Saturday then.”
“I’ll walk you out,” Lucky said, hurrying to join her at the door. She smiled at him and followed him out of the room.
“Something tells me Natasha wouldn’t have invited me if it weren’t for her daughter,” Luke said to Nikolas. “I just wish Lucky would forget about being a witch and ask the girl out. They’re obviously attracted to each other!”
Nikolas nodded. “Yeah, that’s one thing we can agree on.”
“I’ll bet Alexis is going nuts,” Lucky said as he walked to the front door with Liz. “How did the wedding get moved up so much?”
“Something about the place double-booking. I think she’s doing okay. I’m trying to help her as much as I can, which is why I’m delivering the invitations for her. So, you think you’ll be there?”
Lucky nodded, smiling. “Yeah, I will. I guess this means I’ll have to dig out my formal attire, huh?”
“I guess so. I just hope our dresses are ready. Chloe put a rush on them, but you can never tell what might go wrong.”
Lucky opened the door for her and watched her walk outside. “Well, I’m sure everything will be fine. Don’t worry about it, just enjoy it. After all, how many times do you get to watch your mother get married?” He chuckled to himself. “Actually, these days, that may not be the strangest thing.”
“True. Anyway, I better go. Lots of invites to deliver. I’ll see you around, though.” She smiled at him again before turning to leave. Lucky stood in the doorway and watched her go, unable to tear his eyes away. Once she was out of sight, he sighed and closed the door.
