Chapter 2

Liz finished unpacking and looked around the small room. It was comfortable, and once she added some of her own decorations, it would feel more like home. She sighed and sat down on the bed, rereading her letter for the thousandth time since her birthday.

Dearest Raina (although I'm sure you have another name now),

I am sure this will come to a shock to you, but you deserve to know the truth. If your parents carried out my wishes, you should be reading this on your eighteenth birthday. It is my fondest hope that you have had a good life so far, that your family has been loving and generous, and that you have had all the happiness you deserve.

I also hope that the news I am about to give you does not come as a complete shock. I can only assume that you have felt a small void in your life, a slight understanding that there was something you were missing. That is what I am writing to tell you. I am your birth mother. You were adopted as a samll baby, because I was unable to care for you. I cannot go into details here, but I assure you, it was the only choice I had.

You may have noticed that you have certain abilities that most other people do not share. This is because you, like myself and my mother, are a witch. Not the broomstick-riding, green-faced, wart-covered kind in fairy tales, or the evil women that are portrayed in movies. Witches are just like everyday people, except we have the power to do magick. As you get older, this power will intensify, and, with practice, will become easier to control. I am sure you have a hundred questions about this, and am so very sorry that I am not able to answer them for you. I understand the turmoil you must be going through, as I also had to come to terms with my powers on my own. There are others like us out there who may be able to help you, you just have to look carefully.

Once again, I apologize for dropping such news on you. I hope that you can find some comfort in the knowledge of who you truly are. Never forget that you are always in my heart, and I hope that some day you will be able to forgive me for giving you up.

With all my love, Alexis Davidovich

Liz wiped her eyes and folded the letter, slipping it under her mattress. She had always felt different, like she didn't belong in the Webber family. When she discovered that she could move things with her mind and cause some things to materialize out of thin air, especially fire, she knew there was something different about her. Once she knew the truth, she had been determined to find her real mother. Finally, she discovered that Alexis Davidovich, who now went by Alexis Davis, was living in none other than Port Charles, NY, the same city as her grandmother. As soon as she finished high school, she packed her things and left Colorado, hoping to finally forge some kind of relationship with her. Now that she was finally here, she was scared to death that Alexis would reject her.

She sighed and sat back against her headboard. She leaned over and blew on the candle next to her bed, causing a flame to slowly flicker into being around the wick. She smiled and inhaled the lavender fragrance. Scented candles always helped to calm her nerves and clear her mind.

She pulled out the samll file she had created on Alexis, and read through the newspaper clippings from some of the trials she had been involved in. She had read them so many times, she had all of them memorized, but she still felt a small comfort looking at them. The few pictures she had wer fuzzy or distorted, but she still thought she could see a resemblence. She put down the file, blew out the candle, and lay down to take a much-needed nap.

Lucky and Nikolas walked quickly into the Spencer kitchen after sending Lulu up to her room to change out of her play clothes. "Mom, are you forgetting to tell us something?" Lucky asked.

Laura turned around and smiled at her sons. "I don't think so, why do you ask?"

Nikolas rolled his eyes. "Oh, maybe because Lulu has started to use her powers, and we had no idea!"

"I'm sorry, I guess I forgot about that. What happened?"

"She moved a branch off of the sidewalk, and was able to hear us talking" Lucky said, silently communicating the last word to emphasize his point.

Laura chukled. "Oh, I hadn't realized she could do that yet. Look, I'm sorry if it shocked you. She's at that age where her powers are starting to surface. I guess you're just going to have to get used to having another witch in the house!"

"Uh, oh, did I just hear that correctly?" Luke asked, coming into the room.

"Hi Darren!" Nikolas greeted jokingly. He loved to tease Luke for being the only mortal in the house, and was always making little 'Bewitched' comments to him. His favorite was calling him Darren.

Luke rolled his eyes. "You never get tired ot that, do you Broomhilda?"

Nikolas grinned. "Never."

"Okay, guys, separate corners," Lucky said, laughing. "To answer your question, dad, Lulu has discovered her powers."

"Man, we've got our own little coven going now, don't we?" he asked sarcastically, sitting down at the table. Laura walked over to him and kissed him on the top of the head.

"Oh, you know you love us," she said, going over to the oven to check on the chicken.

"Well, most of you anyway," he said, looking pointedly at Nikolas.

Nikolas laughed and slapped him on the back. "Watch it witht the insults there, Luke, or I'll turn you into a newt!"

Luke just rolled his eyes. "I'd like to see you try."

"Someday...." Nikolas said ominously, before laughing along with his brother. "Well, as fun as this is, I better get going before my father sends someone after me." He quickly hugged Laura, clapped Lucky on the back, and headed out the side door.

"Yeah, go back to Spook Island with the other freaks!" Luke yelled after him jokingly. Laura shot him an evil glare and he chuckled. "Oh, you know I'm kidding with him. Us mere mortals gotta have some fun around here!"

Laura rolled her eyes and turned back to the oven as Lucky excused himself and headed for his room. "Dinner will be ready in an hour, so don't got too far."

"Don't worry. I'm just going upstairs," he shouted, running up the stairs.
