Chapter 19

Elizabeth sighed as she wiped down the lunch counter. She still had three hours left in her shift, and she was dying to get out of there. Her feet hurt, and she had a pounding headache. The bell over the door jingled, and she looked up. She smiled widely. “Hey there!”

“You look like you’re having fun,” Alexis joked as she sat down on one of the stools. “Long shift?” She turned over the cup in front of her so Liz could pour her a cup of coffee.

“Yeah, and I’m not even close to being finished.” She smiled as she poured the coffee, then leaned in closer. Do you know any spells that cure aching feet?

Alexis chuckled and shook her head. Sorry, honey, you’re asking the wrong witch. I never really took the time to learn spells. I wish I could help, but the only cure I know of is having my fiancee rub them!

Liz shook her head and smiled. Thanks anyway, but I don’t have one of those! She looked up as the bell jingled again. ‘Not that I wouldn’t mind having one...’ she thought as Lucky walked in. She blushed slightly and looked down at the cups she was stacking.

Alexis noticed the change in her expression and turned around to see Lucky approaching the counter. “Hi, Lucky.”

“Ms. Davis,” he greeted, nodding to her as he took one of the stools next to her.

“Please, just call me Alexis.”

“Okay,” he said with a smile, before turning to look at Liz, who was still trying to busy herself with the dishes. “Hey, Elizabeth.”

She looked up quickly, a plate slipping out of her hand. She cursed under her breath, crouching down to catch it, bracing herself for the inevitable crash. Luckily for her, Alexis had good reflexes, and when it was about an inch away from crashing to the floor, it suddenly floated back up. Liz quickly grabbed it, just as Lucky leaned over the counter to see what she was doing.

“Nice catch!” he said with a smile.

She blushed and stood up with the plate. “Thanks. Quick reflexes.” She glanced at Alexis. Thank you!

No problem, she responded with a smile, taking a sip of her coffee

“So, what’s up?” Liz asked Lucky, trying to sound calm.

He shrugged. “Not much. I just thought I’d stop by and say hi. When’s your shift over?”

“Six,” she answered, glancing at Alexis again, who seemed to be intently studying the side of Lucky’s face. She made a mental note to ask her later what that was all about.

“Great! You want to come over? We’re having a little party tonight.” He chuckled and shook his head. “It’s my dog’s birthday, and my little sister insists on having a party for him!”

Liz smiled at how cute that was. “Sure, sounds like fun. Is it just you and your parents?”

“No, Nikolas and Emily will be there too.”

“Cool. Do you want me to meet you there after my shift?”

“I can meet you here and walk there with you, if you’d like. I mean, you’ve never been to my house before, so it’s probably easier that way,” he said, hoping he wouldn’t scare her off.

She smiled and grabbed the coffee pot, seeing that someone at table 5 was waving her over. “Sure, that sounds fine. Excuse me, but that guy wants some coffee.”

Lucky stood up and nodded. “Don’t let me keep you from working. I better go anyway. I promised Mom I’d help her set up. See you at six.”

“Bye, see you then.” She smiled as she watched him leave, then filled the customer’s cup. She walked back to the counter and looked at Alexis. “What?” she asked, seeing the expression on her mother’s face.

“He likes you,” Alexis said simply, smiling at how Liz instantly blushed.

“How do you know? And why were you staring at him like that before?”

Alexis leaned in so no one would hear. “I can read people’s auras. Some are stronger than others, and his was very strong. Although, I think any mortal could tell the same thing by the way he was acting. It’s kind of cute.”

Liz laughed and shook her head. “So what does my aura tell you right now?”

Alexis looked at her for a moment, her forehead wrinkled with thought. “You’re excited and nervous...and you like him too.”

“Wow, kind of makes my fire thing look silly,” Liz said. “I’m jealous. And thanks again for the save earlier. If I broke another plate, Bobbie would probably fire me. I don’t suppose you can hang around here while I’m working more often?”

Alexis laughed. “We got lucky that time, since you were hidden behind the counter. I doubt it would work all the time. You’re welcome though.” She stood up and grabbed her purse. “Sorry to drink and run, but I’m meeting Ned in a few minutes. I’ll see you later!”

“Okay, bye,” Liz said, waving as she left the diner. She sighed and went back to wiping down the counter, her mind wandering to Lucky’s invitation. Six o’clock seemed even farther away now!

Lucky ran into his house, slamming the door behind him. “Mom!”

“In the kitchen!” she yelled.

He hurried through the door. “Hey Nikolas,” he greeted, seeing his brother sitting at the kitchen table. “You’re early.”

Nikolas shrugged. “I promised to help set up. What’s got you so riled up?”

Lucky smiled and sat across from him. “Elizabeth’s coming, so I wanted to warn you guys to keep the witchy stuff under wraps. Do you think Lulu will do anything?”

Laura shook her head. “No, she’s gotten better, and Emily’s coming too, so I already talked to her about it.” She turned to smile at Lucky. “So, she’s coming to meet the family, huh?”

Lucky rolled his eyes. “You guys aren’t going to make a big deal out of this, are you?”

Laura and Nikolas both laughed. “Of course they are!” Nikolas said. “Something tells me Luke is going to have a ball with this.” He turned to look at Laura, who nodded in agreement.

“You know your father, he can’t pass up an opportunity to embarrass you. I hope you warned her.”

Lucky sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “No, but I’ll make sure to do just that when I pick her up.” He stood up and went to the door, deciding to go up to his room for a while.

“Oooh, you’re picking her up?” Nikolas teased, ducking as a placemat whizzed over his head. Lucky turned and smiled innocently.

“Oops, sorry about that,” he chuckled, ducking as another placemat came flying at him as well.

“Hey!” Laura shouted, trying not to laugh. “I thought we agreed not to use witchcraft today!”

Lucky shrugged and Nikolas turned to look at her. “Only when Emily and Liz are here. Until then, it’s every man for himself,” he joked, turning back to watch Lucky escape the room. He chuckled and went to pick up the placemats, which were now laying on the floor.
